The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) disclosed that Ahlgren, an early BTC investor, purchased 1,366 BTC in 2015 at prices under $500 each. By October 2017, he sold 640 BTC for $3.7 million and used the proceeds to buy a house in Utah. However, Ahlgren filed a tax return that falsely inflated the cost basis of his Bitcoin holdings, significantly underreporting his capital gains.
