This is a mirror of the original BitMEX trollbox archive that used to be online here.
BitMEX disabled their archive after the DDOS attack so I have decided to make my mirror publicly available.

Well now, a few days after I made this mirror available to the public, the original archive from BitMEX is online again.
But since it is still limited (neutered to the last few hundred messages) I will keep my FULL mirror alive.

You have access to more than 50 million trollbox posts. This is more than 7 gigabyte of data hosted on a $5 server so please be patient or consider a donation

[2015-03-09 13:36:20] alb_gt : no pb
[2015-03-09 14:43:18] BitMEX_Sam : alb_gt: Please refresh, that's fixed - thank you for reporting
[2015-03-09 15:59:35] Tone : So i will call myself an Idiot first, but just as a heads up, it is really dangerous to have completely different contracts for the Daily XBU vs the Monthly XBU, cause i just went full account short for H14 vs selling 1/4 of my long position on 24H.
[2015-03-09 16:00:39] Tone : it was actually just bad luck other than stupidity cause had i tried to sell what i thought was 1/3 of my long position I would have gotten a "not enough funds" message which would have been nice
[2015-03-09 16:02:42] Tone : I was actually long on H14 as well at the time, but very small. Just a heads up... not sure if anyone else has fucked up like that... if they have, you might want to separate the 24H contract in it's own set LOL
[2015-03-09 17:11:18] Tone : basically my issue is not my dumb move it's that the contract size of XBU24H is more in line with XBT's than with XBU's... hence the main reason why I was trading XBT's and XBU24H so that I only have to think about one type of contract size
[2015-03-09 17:12:34] Tone : Trading XBU24H and XBU's causes a silly mistake to be amplified 50x due to significantly different contract sizes...
[2015-03-09 17:12:46] Tone : Or maybe i'm just crazy and need to stop multitasking
[2015-03-09 22:27:44] floopfloop : are the withdrawals done in 30 min or 12 hours and 30 min?
[2015-03-09 22:28:24] floopfloop : nm i think its 12:30
[2015-03-10 06:20:42] floopfloop : anyone here?

[2015-03-10 15:30:30] btcers : 2015-03-10 16:06:15 Withdrawal -0.2001 XBT still not completed (
[2015-03-10 15:41:35] BitMEX_Arthur : btcers: your withdrawal will be processed on Mar 11 at 12 GMT
[2015-03-10 15:41:57] BitMEX_Arthur : as per our withdrawal policy, we process manually once daily at 12:00 GMT
[2015-03-10 15:47:13] btcers : tnx! can I still cancel that withdrawal?
[2015-03-10 15:48:25] BitMEX_Arthur : yes
[2015-03-10 15:49:00] btcers : How can I do it?
[2015-03-10 15:50:37] BitMEX_Arthur : Under `Account` on `Wallet History`
[2015-03-10 15:53:52] btcers : there is no any aviable actions in history..I didnt mentioned that withdrawal was confirmed via email. maybe its a reason?
[2015-03-10 15:59:30] btcers : can you cancel that last withdrawal manually please?
[2015-03-10 15:59:55] BitMEX_Arthur : btcers: please send an email to support@bitmex.com
[2015-03-10 16:00:03] BitMEX_Arthur : from the email account on record
[2015-03-10 16:03:55] btcers : ok, thanks
[2015-03-10 22:10:39] blackdog6621 : silly question: what does the chart show? if I'm looking at `XBU24H` does that represent just trades for that contract on this exchange? I'm seeing things that I don't find in the recent trades section.
[2015-03-10 23:49:51] BitMEX_Arthur : blackdog6621: it should show trade history
[2015-03-10 23:50:12] BitMEX_Arthur : can you send a screenshot of what you are seeing to support@bitmex.com and we can investigate is something is wrong
[2015-03-11 00:50:19] blackdog6621 : I put in a ticket, I'm pretty sure what's in the tradingview chart has had the timezone change removed twice
[2015-03-11 00:52:21] BitMEX_Arthur : thanks
[2015-03-11 02:00:38] BitMEX_Sam : Hey blackdog6621 - I did some investigation of your issue, and I'm writing here in case any of our other users see it -
[2015-03-11 02:01:48] BitMEX_Sam : TradingView has its own mechanism of managing time zones, and unfortunately it uses specific names like `America/New_York` instead of offsets, which can lead to problems if you are in a different area with the same time zone. Additionally, there appears to be at least one time zone missing entirely from their configuration.
[2015-03-11 02:02:10] BitMEX_Sam : I'm talking with them about it now. In the meantime if your chart is significantly off, the data is not stale, it's only the labels. You can right click the chart and select a time zone via the menu.
[2015-03-11 04:57:10] blackdog6621 : Thanks for checking into that. It looks like my chart is showing the trades correctly, at the correct times, except that it thinks right now is about 5 hours ago in my time zone. The most recent trade on the chart is correct but 5 hours old.
[2015-03-11 10:43:17] BitMEX_Sam : Thanks to @blackdog6621 for the report. We've alerted TradingView to the problem and we've deployed a fix internally so the bug will not affect BitMEX.
[2015-03-12 07:47:00] BitMEX_Sam : If you're trying to get short, there's a lot of liquidity on XBUH15 right now
[2015-03-12 08:34:41] gaoMex : Hey Sam, I wonder if you could clarify a question.
[2015-03-12 08:36:56] BitMEX_Sam : Sure, go ahead
[2015-03-12 08:37:03] gaoMex : I notice the price at XBTH15 is higher than XBTU15. Both settle at the same date and time and the underlying assets are different for each. Why the (significant) difference in price?
[2015-03-12 08:37:38] BitMEX_Sam : XBT series contracts are more favorable for long positions.
[2015-03-12 08:37:48] BitMEX_Sam : See that announcements about our XBT/XBU spreadsheets?
[2015-03-12 08:38:26] BitMEX_Sam : When you open them, there is a sidebar that should open up that walks you through how they work. See the section about XBT gamma, it explains why there should be a price difference between the two types of contracts.
[2015-03-12 08:38:34] BitMEX_Sam : We've also posted more on it here - https://blog.bitmex.com/xbt-vs-xbu-chain/
[2015-03-12 08:41:13] gaoMex : So, if I long XBU and short XBT, if spot price rises significantly, I will still lose?
[2015-03-12 08:43:39] BitMEX_Sam : Yes, but in the opposite position (short XBU, long XBT), you will gain a small percentage
[2015-03-12 08:43:58] BitMEX_Sam : This is the essence of why they do not trade at the same price.
[2015-03-12 08:46:01] gaoMex : Alright, I haven't get it fully yet. I understand the difference is because the underlying asset is different. I will look more into it. Thanks!
[2015-03-12 08:47:19] gaoMex : Sorry, 1 more question if I may.
[2015-03-12 08:47:40] gaoMex : In terms of liquidity, which is higher?
[2015-03-12 08:50:59] BitMEX_Sam : Right now XBUH15 is very liquid
[2015-03-12 08:51:28] BitMEX_Sam : If you expand the instruments table, you will see the keys `openInterest` and `openValue` at the very end of the table
[2015-03-12 08:51:54] BitMEX_Sam : That shows the total number of outstanding contracts (not how many in the orderbook, but how many are currently open)
[2015-03-12 08:52:17] BitMEX_Sam : Turnover tells you how much has traded back and forth.
[2015-03-12 08:52:32] BitMEX_Sam : Other than that, you can just look at the book and see. If you click a level, it will tell you in the order controls what the gross value of the level is.
[2015-03-12 08:53:07] gaoMex : Roger that. Thanks a lot!
[2015-03-12 08:53:16] BitMEX_Arthur : gaoMex: we are focusing our MM on `XBU` chain to bring more liquidity there so you will find going forward more traders there
[2015-03-12 08:53:51] BitMEX_Sam : Yep - `XBU` is a simpler contract to understand and better for hedging so we are focusing on it more than `XBT`.
[2015-03-12 08:54:08] BitMEX_Sam : Liquidity permitting, `XBT` will continue to trade into the future.
[2015-03-12 08:54:54] gaoMex : Yes, looking forward to it. Just to have a sense when the MM will be coming in, coming days or weeks?
[2015-03-12 08:55:42] BitMEX_Sam : Can't say for sure, but we are finishing up an automatic MM monitoring solution, and working relationships with a few MMs to provide constant liquidity
[2015-03-12 08:56:39] BitMEX_Sam : Unlike other systems, the monitoring will incentivize quoting for longer time periods and shorter spreads, rather than simply focusing on the amount traded
[2015-03-12 08:56:53] BitMEX_Sam : It will use that data to determine a fair discount.
[2015-03-12 08:57:04] gaoMex : Ok. I notice also that BitMEX is getting more popular. Even Harry Yeh mentioned it in a recent talk in the MIT Expo.
[2015-03-12 08:57:26] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah, he's a fan - we enjoyed that mention!
[2015-03-12 08:58:31] gaoMex : If more prominent like him help to spread the good word around, I foresee BitMEX will become one of the top futures market for bitcoin.
[2015-03-12 08:58:44] gaoMex : *prominent people
[2015-03-12 08:59:06] BitMEX_Sam : That's our hope too - we will continue to increase our edge by offering a different type of trading than our competitors
[2015-03-12 08:59:13] BitMEX_Sam : We believe there's a significant market for it as Bitcoin grows
[2015-03-13 01:19:44] BitMEX_Arthur : morning who thinks we are going over $300 today
[2015-03-13 01:55:23] lmazzola : I have traded equities for 20 years however never futures. What do I buy for min 30 day long exposure to BTC ?
[2015-03-13 02:01:03] BitMEX_Arthur : I would buy `XBUU15` that will give you exposure until `25 September 2015`
[2015-03-13 02:01:41] BitMEX_Arthur : lmazzola: if you need more size than what you see on the screen let us know and we can help contact one of our MM to make a price for you
[2015-03-13 02:02:40] BitMEX_Arthur : I used to be a delta one equities trader as well in my previous life
[2015-03-13 02:03:44] lmazzola : No Im im fine with size. Im asking about XBU it says inverse. What does that mean. I dont want to short. I want to go long.
[2015-03-13 02:04:20] BitMEX_Arthur : Each `XBU` contract is worth $100 of Bitcoin at all times
[2015-03-13 02:04:50] BitMEX_Arthur : so the function for the value of the contract in Bitcoin terms is `100/Price`
[2015-03-13 02:04:59] BitMEX_Arthur : that's why we call it an inverse contract
[2015-03-13 02:05:28] lmazzola : Ok so the leverage is 100 to 1 ?
[2015-03-13 02:06:17] BitMEX_Arthur : No, for example if the `BTCUSD` price is $500, each contract is worth `0.2 BTC = 100/500`
[2015-03-13 02:06:30] lmazzola : ok ty
[2015-03-13 02:07:14] BitMEX_Arthur : Initial margin is 30%, so you would need to post 0.06 BTC to place an order
[2015-03-13 02:07:41] BitMEX_Arthur : we allow leverage of up to 5x, or a maintenance margin of 20%
[2015-03-13 02:08:34] lmazzola : Im still a little confused. If I own 1 XBUH15 how many shares do I control or am I still looking at it wrong?
[2015-03-13 02:08:46] lmazzola : or how many coins should I say
[2015-03-13 02:10:04] lmazzola : I currently trade on bitfinex and btc.sx(cant buy on there currenty)
[2015-03-13 02:10:19] BitMEX_Arthur : If you have bought 1 `XBUH15` you sold $100 vs. bought 100/297 (the last price) or 0.3367 BTC
[2015-03-13 02:10:35] BitMEX_Arthur : that 1 `XBUH15` contract will always be worth $100
[2015-03-13 02:10:45] BitMEX_Arthur : but the Bitcoin amount will vary depending on the `BTCUSD` price
[2015-03-13 02:12:00] lmazzola : ok now Im starting to understand.
[2015-03-13 02:12:25] BitMEX_Arthur : The one major difference between margin trading on Bitfinex and BTC.sx is that there is not daily funding charge
[2015-03-13 02:12:53] BitMEX_Arthur : the implied borrowing and lending rate of USD and BTC is implied by the difference between the `XBUH15` price and the underlying spot price
[2015-03-13 02:13:14] BitMEX_Arthur : the market determines that spread
[2015-03-15 02:55:25] BitMEX_Arthur : Morning, we are launching an Exchange Default Swap and want feedback on the possible structure, please take a look and comment http://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/2z33wh/bitmex_wants_community_feedback_on_new_product/
[2015-03-15 14:30:19] goat : Nice, taking a look now. This product looks awesome.
[2015-03-16 04:34:31] wouhao : is there something wrong in withdrawal?
[2015-03-16 04:35:46] wouhao : the time is 2015-03-16 10:00:15, and the transactStatus is Confirmed, but I don't receive it at this time
[2015-03-16 04:41:45] BitMEX_Sam : wouhao: Withdrawals are processed and verified daily at 12 GMT by at least two BitMEX partners
[2015-03-16 04:41:55] BitMEX_Sam : There should be more information in the confirmation and request emails.
[2015-03-18 08:35:39] zucchini : hi
[2015-03-18 08:35:48] BitMEX_Arthur : Hello
[2015-03-18 08:36:12] zucchini : if I want to start using bitmex, where should i start?
[2015-03-18 08:36:57] BitMEX_Arthur : To deposit funds, click on the Deposit page and a multi signature address will be presented, after 1 confirmation you will be allowed to place orders
[2015-03-18 08:37:51] BitMEX_Arthur : Do you have any questions about the products we offer for trading?
[2015-03-18 08:38:55] zucchini : yes, I have no previous experience using futures, only in direct buy/selling, What can i do with your products, where to start actually.
[2015-03-18 08:39:54] BitMEX_Arthur : I suggest you start with `XBU24H`, this is a futures contract that expires daily, each contract is worth 1 `USD`
[2015-03-18 08:40:04] zucchini : And what's the advantage of using bitmex versus bitfinix futures?
[2015-03-18 08:40:21] BitMEX_Arthur : Bitfinex offeres margin trading which is different
[2015-03-18 08:40:44] BitMEX_Arthur : you must pay a daily interest rate determined by the market, this can get expensive if you intend on holding positions for a extended period of time
[2015-03-18 08:40:50] zucchini : k, XBY24H is a trading or a hedging product?
[2015-03-18 08:41:06] BitMEX_Arthur : you can use it for both
[2015-03-18 08:41:24] BitMEX_Arthur : you may go long Bitcoin by buying `XBU24H` and go short Bitcoin by selling it
[2015-03-18 08:41:47] zucchini : Do you have products noted in other base currencies aswell , like EUR and CNY
[2015-03-18 08:42:08] BitMEX_Arthur : No at the moment the only exchange rate we support is Bitcoin vs. USD
[2015-03-18 08:42:21] BitMEX_Arthur : as that's the most popular and liquid pair
[2015-03-18 08:44:04] BitMEX_Arthur : The good thing about using BitMEX futures contracts is that you can go long or short with Bitcoin as margin
[2015-03-18 08:44:08] BitMEX_Arthur : we don't touch any fiat currencies
[2015-03-18 08:44:24] zucchini : So, if I have a portion of btc and I want to hedge the risk of going low, I buy the exact amount of USD values xbu24H. So when going up or down the two cancel each other out?
[2015-03-18 08:50:53] BitMEX_Arthur : Assume you have 10 Bitcoin worth $300
[2015-03-18 08:51:08] BitMEX_Arthur : Each `XBU24H` contract is worth $1
[2015-03-18 08:51:28] BitMEX_Arthur : sorry 10 Bitcoin worth $3000
[2015-03-18 08:52:19] BitMEX_Arthur : you can sell 3,000 contracts to completely hedge your Bitcoin vs. USD risk. That way no matter what the Bitcoin / USD rate you will always have $3000 worth of Bitcoin
[2015-03-18 08:54:56] zucchini : And what do I pay for this, what is the total fee which will get substracted?
[2015-03-18 08:55:09] zucchini : That's exactly what i'm looking for
[2015-03-18 08:56:17] BitMEX_Arthur : for `XBU24H` if you place an order that does not get executed immediately (called making) it is free, if you place an order and it is filled immediately (called taking liquidity) it is 0.03%
[2015-03-18 08:59:33] zucchini : If i get your example right, and i want a direct hedge from this very moment, I take liquidity off the market and pay 3000 * .03% = 0.9 usd,
[2015-03-18 09:00:18] zucchini : And if I put in below current market price, i put liquidity on the market and pay 0.
[2015-03-18 09:00:52] BitMEX_Arthur : All commissions are paid in Bitcoin, so if each contract price is $300 and you trade 3,000 contracts that's appx 10 Bitcoin, so you would pay 0.003 Bitcoin in commission
[2015-03-18 09:01:14] BitMEX_Arthur : and yes if you place a unfilled limit order, you will pay no commission
[2015-03-18 09:02:44] zucchini : Do I have to deposit all my btc to hedge it or should I just couple a wallet or something?
[2015-03-18 09:03:16] BitMEX_Arthur : We require 30% of the positions value in Bitcoin as initial margin, so if you opened a position worth 10 Bitcoin, you would need to deposit 3 Bitcoin
[2015-03-18 09:03:42] BitMEX_Arthur : If your margin balance declines, we will send alert emails before a margin call is issued
[2015-03-18 09:04:01] BitMEX_Arthur : If your equity to position value drops below 20% we issue a margin call
[2015-03-18 09:04:54] zucchini : When margin called you close the position?
[2015-03-18 09:05:18] BitMEX_Arthur : We only close enough to get your equity to position value back above 20%
[2015-03-18 09:05:41] BitMEX_Arthur : Our liquidation algo tries its best to close as few as possible of your open positions
[2015-03-18 09:06:01] zucchini : k, and how much time is between getting alerted and closing?
[2015-03-18 09:06:30] zucchini : How much time before you can react to fill an extra deposit
[2015-03-18 09:06:49] BitMEX_Arthur : As soon as we see a Bitcoin broadcast to your deposit address liquidation will cease
[2015-03-18 09:07:08] BitMEX_Arthur : We send various email notifications starting when your account is 5% away from margin call
[2015-03-18 09:07:42] zucchini : But in btc panic, things move fast.
[2015-03-18 09:08:17] BitMEX_Arthur : That's why we send email notifications well before a margin call happens
[2015-03-18 09:08:25] BitMEX_Arthur : so that you have every opportunity of averting the situation
[2015-03-18 09:08:38] zucchini : k, think i will try and start with just 1 btc and see how it goes
[2015-03-18 09:08:57] zucchini : Anyplace i could read up on this?
[2015-03-18 09:09:11] BitMEX_Arthur : Yes please look at the `References` section
[2015-03-18 09:09:23] BitMEX_Arthur : we have various tutorials for people new to futures trading
[2015-03-18 09:09:25] uiop : thinking about that exchange default contract,
[2015-03-18 09:09:40] uiop : another contract that could be useful is
[2015-03-18 09:10:01] uiop : for each exchange, a futs contract with underlying the socialized loss of that exchange's futs
[2015-03-18 09:10:29] BitMEX_Arthur : you aren't the first user to suggest that, how would pay out work
[2015-03-18 09:10:30] uiop : 0% socialized loss, long side settles worthless
[2015-03-18 09:10:31] BitMEX_Arthur : straight 1:1
[2015-03-18 09:10:53] uiop : maybe yeah, i havent thought further about exact contract spec
[2015-03-18 09:11:02] zucchini : Thanks for you time, You were very helpfull
[2015-03-18 09:11:12] BitMEX_Arthur : zucchini: We are here to help anytime
[2015-03-18 09:11:37] BitMEX_Arthur : uiop: Hmm that sounds quite interesting, so which chinese exchanges would you want it on the most
[2015-03-18 09:11:46] BitMEX_Arthur : OKCoin I imagine
[2015-03-18 09:12:19] BitMEX_Arthur : and on what contract the front weekly?
[2015-03-18 09:13:25] uiop : yeah, i personally use okcoin, so okcoin weekly and/or quarterly would be interesting
[2015-03-18 09:13:50] uiop : if only had one though, maybe quarterly since probably more people using that to actually hedge
[2015-03-18 09:15:15] uiop : at least, thats what i do, always have a quarterly hedge for my btc on there so im neutral to price moves, but dont need to go 2 legs each way from/to fiat
[2015-03-18 09:16:50] uiop : *neutral to price moves in between making directional bets
[2015-03-18 09:18:58] BitMEX_Arthur : we will take a look as i said you aren't the first user to suggest that
[2015-03-18 09:19:06] uiop : cool
[2015-03-18 09:19:56] uiop : dunno how that would trade though, unless you had a constantly updating current total socialized losses incurred at even spaced intervals
[2015-03-18 09:20:34] uiop : which who knows if okcoin would comply with
[2015-03-18 09:20:36] BitMEX_Arthur : well it would have to be a contract for difference, if you bought at X and loss is Y u make Y-X
[2015-03-18 09:20:58] uiop : hmm, o i see, yeah that makes sense
[2015-03-18 09:53:31] zucchini : Anywhere I can find referal codes?
[2015-03-18 09:53:54] BitMEX_Arthur : `BitMEX Affiliates` on the main navigation menu will have your link
[2015-03-18 09:55:22] zucchini : Ah, right but before signing up I need one..
[2015-03-18 09:58:29] BitMEX_Arthur : Hold on...
[2015-03-18 10:00:52] BitMEX_Arthur : try this https://www.bitmex.com/register/fp3936
[2015-03-18 10:04:09] zucchini : thx, seems to be working
[2015-03-18 10:04:35] BitMEX_Arthur : zucchini: How did you hear about BitMEX?
[2015-03-18 10:06:05] zucchini : Not sure rly, think i saw something on reddit about it
[2015-03-18 10:07:14] zucchini : Wanted to try it for a long time, but want an honest exchange
[2015-03-18 10:08:08] BitMEX_Arthur : Nice, you can also refer people and earn a % of their trading revenue they bring to BitMEX, you will find a unique referral link
[2015-03-18 10:08:20] BitMEX_Arthur : on the `BitMEX Affiliates` page
[2015-03-18 10:11:39] zucchini : great, but first i'll have to try and experience if this exchanges is as good as it seems.
[2015-03-18 23:45:02] BitMEX_Arthur : Morning
[2015-03-19 01:37:19] goat : BitMEX_Arthur: btc getting crushed today!

[2015-03-19 01:38:18] goat : whatever, make some lose some
[2015-03-19 01:38:25] BitMEX_Arthur : as long as you are still playing
[2015-03-19 01:38:26] goat : shit happens, then you die
[2015-03-19 01:38:39] joequant : I'm annoyed because my alarm didn't go off last night.
[2015-03-19 01:38:53] BitMEX_Arthur : i missed the dip to 263
[2015-03-19 01:38:56] goat : yeah i still have most of my stash
[2015-03-19 01:39:00] BitMEX_Arthur : but got up for the massive dump
[2015-03-19 01:39:02] goat : my play coins are for play
[2015-03-19 01:39:22] goat : i just longed this dip then sold at a slight loss
[2015-03-19 01:39:26] joequant : no obvious reason for the drop.
[2015-03-19 01:39:27] goat : i expected it to bounce more
[2015-03-19 01:39:33] goat : yeah exactly
[2015-03-19 01:39:34] BitMEX_Arthur : it's bitcoin
[2015-03-19 01:39:38] joequant : yeah
[2015-03-19 01:39:38] BitMEX_Arthur : never anything rational
[2015-03-19 01:39:39] goat : people get so freaked out
[2015-03-19 01:39:46] goat : there is no way those hacked coins will get sold
[2015-03-19 01:39:49] goat : 0% chance
[2015-03-19 01:39:52] BitMEX_Arthur : exactly
[2015-03-19 01:39:52] joequant : I like it when people freak out.
[2015-03-19 01:39:59] joequant : Culls the herd.
[2015-03-19 01:40:01] goat : they will get converted to alt coins or slowly cashed out
[2015-03-19 01:40:02] BitMEX_Arthur : u would be an idiot to sell ur coins on an exchange
[2015-03-19 01:40:07] goat : yeah exactly
[2015-03-19 01:40:16] goat : thats what i have been talking to my girlfriend about all ngith lol
[2015-03-19 01:40:27] joequant : fresh meat.
[2015-03-19 01:40:31] BitMEX_Arthur : that's cool she understands what's going on
[2015-03-19 01:40:32] BitMEX_Arthur : :)
[2015-03-19 01:40:40] joequant : Sell!!! Sell!!! Sell!!! Buy!!! Buy!!! Sell!!!
[2015-03-19 01:40:45] goat : what are you going to do.. cash out to bfx and then have the cash wired to you via the swift system whcih it is documented the nsa watches lol
[2015-03-19 01:40:51] joequant : says the guy at the cash register.
[2015-03-19 01:41:05] BitMEX_Arthur : just use shapeshift
[2015-03-19 01:41:10] goat : ehh
[2015-03-19 01:41:16] BitMEX_Arthur : no emails
[2015-03-19 01:41:18] BitMEX_Arthur : just addresses
[2015-03-19 01:41:19] goat : run by voorhees
[2015-03-19 01:41:22] BitMEX_Arthur : with a coinjoin
[2015-03-19 01:41:24] BitMEX_Arthur : yeah tru
[2015-03-19 01:41:24] goat : look at the deal he cut man
[2015-03-19 01:41:31] goat : tell me he isnt in bed wit them too
[2015-03-19 01:41:47] goat : was it meant to be? lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_W._Voorhees
[2015-03-19 01:43:19] goat : Voorhees was a member of the powerful Finance Committee throughout his service in the Senate, and his first speech in that body was a defence of the free coinage of silver and a plea for the preservation of the full legal tender value of greenback currency.
[2015-03-19 01:43:24] goat : lol
[2015-03-21 07:48:32] BitMEX_Sam : Morning traders
[2015-03-21 11:09:29] null : are quanto futures getting discontinued?
[2015-03-21 11:10:40] BitMEX_Sam : null: No, XBTJ15 will list soon
[2015-03-21 11:10:53] null : ok perfect
[2015-03-21 11:11:10] BitMEX_Sam : As well as an H15_J15 cal spread for rolling
[2015-03-21 11:15:05] BitMEX_Sam : We will list on Monday at 12 GMT
[2015-03-21 13:40:58] joequant : cool
[2015-03-21 13:41:15] joequant : I should have a paper out in the next two weeks on how to price quanto options.
[2015-03-21 13:43:45] joequant : The quanto options have an extra "kick" from the volatiity.
[2015-03-22 23:24:16] BitMEX_Arthur : Morning traders
[2015-03-23 08:55:37] BitMEX_Arthur : Great liquidity on `XBUH15`
[2015-03-23 23:40:39] BitMEX_Arthur : Morning traders
[2015-03-24 15:46:58] BitMEX_Arthur : Will $240 get taken out on Bitfinex tonight?
[2015-03-24 16:38:55] goat : the bears ran out of coins to borrow
[2015-03-24 16:39:02] goat : right now the right move is to lend btc imo
[2015-03-24 16:39:44] goat : i have some out in the 0.7% range
[2015-03-24 21:14:48] BitWise : @BitMEX_Arthur: Who can be contacted for help with api integration?
[2015-03-24 21:16:15] BitMEX_Sam : BitWise: You can email me - sam@bitmex.com
[2015-03-24 21:19:36] BitWise : Can you tell me if there are any changes to the documentation or api in the last months?
[2015-03-24 21:20:01] relisys : :P
[2015-03-24 21:20:28] BitMEX_Sam : There have been added features, mostly small things, like bulk order cancel, statistics and a simple websocket orderbook
[2015-03-24 21:20:30] BitWise : I'm trying to help coinigy to integtrate you in their tooling
[2015-03-24 21:20:41] relisys : this is Rob
[2015-03-24 21:20:46] relisys : from Coinigy
[2015-03-24 21:20:54] relisys : I'm in your IRC channel, lol
[2015-03-24 21:20:55] BitMEX_Sam : The only breaking change was to /user which no longer returns margin details, see https://blog.bitmex.com/site_announcement/notice-of-api-change/
[2015-03-24 21:20:58] BitMEX_Sam : Hey Rob
[2015-03-24 21:21:04] BitWise : Hi Rob
[2015-03-24 21:21:22] BitMEX_Sam : Was wondering who that was idling all day long
[2015-03-24 21:21:25] relisys : I'm going to see if we can get your data feed integrated right now, can I ask any quesitons in here if necessary?
[2015-03-24 21:21:33] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah feel free, I'll get them
[2015-03-24 21:21:44] BitMEX_Sam : I'm in Poland right now and the wireless leaves a lot to be desired but I'll try to get back to you as quickly as I can
[2015-03-24 21:21:51] BitMEX_Sam : Email is generally better
[2015-03-24 21:22:09] BitMEX_Sam : But I'll receive it either way.
[2015-03-24 21:22:15] BitWise : No wifi, but they have great devs!!
[2015-03-24 21:22:27] BitMEX_Sam : That's a true story - talented engineers here.
[2015-03-24 21:23:17] relisys : hwo can i best reach you by email?
[2015-03-24 21:23:19] relisys : how
[2015-03-24 21:23:21] BitMEX_Sam : Just sam@bitmex.com
[2015-03-24 21:23:26] relisys : k
[2015-03-24 21:23:35] BitMEX_Sam : You're integrating with the websocket?
[2015-03-24 21:24:25] relisys : yeah
[2015-03-24 21:24:33] relisys : and http for full order books
[2015-03-24 21:24:49] BitMEX_Sam : Cool. One change we made recently was to add `orderBook10` for a simpler orderbook feed
[2015-03-24 21:24:59] relisys : and http for a full market data call if you have one
[2015-03-24 21:25:01] BitMEX_Sam : Dealing with the deltas on `orderBook` can be somewhat onerous
[2015-03-24 21:25:09] relisys : does that only give 10 records though?
[2015-03-24 21:25:13] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah.
[2015-03-24 21:25:17] relisys : if it gave 20 i'd be in heaven
[2015-03-24 21:25:30] BitMEX_Sam : If you want the whole thing you have to do deltas. I'll see what I can do about 20
[2015-03-24 21:25:35] BitWise : loop it twice
[2015-03-24 21:25:38] BitMEX_Sam : :D
[2015-03-24 21:25:42] relisys : ;)
[2015-03-24 21:25:49] BitMEX_Sam : As for all market data, you can get the majority of what you need from /instrument
[2015-03-24 21:25:53] relisys : that's what huobi, okcoin and some other have
[2015-03-24 21:26:02] relisys : and that's what we show on our site
[2015-03-24 21:26:11] BitMEX_Sam : Ah. Thought they only did 10 via the WS
[2015-03-24 21:26:13] relisys : i'll checkout /instrument
[2015-03-24 21:26:29] relisys : and bistamp does 25
[2015-03-24 21:26:31] BitMEX_Sam : There are a lot of keys on each symbol, see openInterest, bidPrice, lastPrice, etc
[2015-03-24 21:26:47] BitMEX_Sam : I've been meaning to do a reference client for our delta scheme
[2015-03-24 21:26:52] relisys : what about 24 hr volume, high and low?
[2015-03-24 21:26:54] BitMEX_Sam : It's not too difficult, the site uses it, you can delta an unlimited depth book
[2015-03-24 21:27:03] relisys : yeah, i hear you
[2015-03-24 21:27:08] relisys : a few others exchanges do it
[2015-03-24 21:27:11] BitMEX_Sam : https://www.bitmex.com/api/explorer/#!/stats/find
[2015-03-24 21:27:14] relisys : integrating each one is a pita
[2015-03-24 21:27:16] BitMEX_Sam : True
[2015-03-24 21:27:17] relisys : to be honest with you
[2015-03-24 21:27:19] BitMEX_Sam : I wish there were a standard
[2015-03-24 21:27:55] relisys : otherwise what i do is just poll every 3 seconds and pull off the top 20 and then push them out via ws
[2015-03-24 21:28:23] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah that's decent. We definitely prefer people use the WS, I'll see about doing an orderBook20
[2015-03-24 21:28:26] relisys : but we also store the full order books as well, seperately
[2015-03-24 21:28:30] BitMEX_Sam : What's your backend, python?
[2015-03-24 21:28:41] relisys : for polling yeah
[2015-03-24 21:28:52] relisys : node.js for ws stuffs
[2015-03-24 21:28:57] BitMEX_Sam : Good and good
[2015-03-24 21:29:10] BitMEX_Sam : Actually if you're using node for websocket you could probably reuse our browser-side delta code
[2015-03-24 21:29:23] BitMEX_Sam : Email me and remind me and I'll send you a minimal version if you like
[2015-03-24 21:29:27] relisys : i expect to have the ws proof of concept going here shortly if it all works the way i expect
[2015-03-24 21:29:35] relisys : ok will do
[2015-03-24 21:30:09] relisys : if i want to connect with require('ws')
[2015-03-24 21:30:10] relisys : wss://www.bitmex.com/realtime
[2015-03-24 21:30:14] relisys : is that the correct endpoint?
[2015-03-24 21:30:15] BitMEX_Sam : Yep that's the one
[2015-03-24 21:30:23] BitMEX_Sam : You can connect with a querystring to autosubscribe if you like
[2015-03-24 21:30:24] relisys : k
[2015-03-24 21:30:45] relisys : i need to subscribe to all instruments at once
[2015-03-24 21:30:51] relisys : is that ok with your server #1
[2015-03-24 21:31:05] relisys : and #2, should i subscribe with a querystring still?
[2015-03-24 21:31:16] BitMEX_Sam : e.g. `wss://www.bitmex.com/realtime?subscribe=instrument,trade,orderBook`
[2015-03-24 21:31:48] relisys : how many total instruments do you have?
[2015-03-24 21:31:48] BitMEX_Sam : btw if you're using Node, `npm install -g wscat`
[2015-03-24 21:32:02] relisys : what is that?
[2015-03-24 21:32:04] BitMEX_Sam : 11 right now
[2015-03-24 21:32:09] BitMEX_Sam : It's a wrapper around `ws` for CLI usage
[2015-03-24 21:32:23] BitMEX_Sam : then you can do nice things from the terminal like `wscat -c "wss://www.bitmex.com/realtime?subscribe=instrument,trade,orderBook"`
[2015-03-24 21:32:35] relisys : interesting
[2015-03-24 21:32:41] BitMEX_Sam : great for debugging
[2015-03-24 21:32:45] relisys : yeah
[2015-03-24 21:33:02] relisys : so... if i subscribe to just "trade"
[2015-03-24 21:33:07] relisys : is that all trades for all instruments?
[2015-03-24 21:33:09] BitMEX_Sam : Yep
[2015-03-24 21:33:13] relisys : nice
[2015-03-24 21:33:24] BitMEX_Sam : You can filter down if you like, e.g. `trade:XBU24H`, `trade:XBUH15`
[2015-03-24 21:33:27] relisys : and is instrument just on a pulse basically?
[2015-03-24 21:33:30] relisys : like every n seconds
[2015-03-24 21:33:31] relisys : ?
[2015-03-24 21:33:34] BitMEX_Sam : Nope, only on update
[2015-03-24 21:33:43] relisys : update of any number on any instrument?
[2015-03-24 21:33:45] BitMEX_Sam : Yep
[2015-03-24 21:34:10] relisys : is there an http request for that?
[2015-03-24 21:34:13] BitMEX_Sam : Every ws datasource is realtime
[2015-03-24 21:34:22] relisys : i only need to run that once every 30 seconds or so
[2015-03-24 21:34:23] BitMEX_Sam : Yep it's the same via http. `/instrument`, `/trade`, etc
[2015-03-24 21:34:32] BitMEX_Sam : See https://www.bitmex.com/api/explorer/
[2015-03-24 21:34:45] BitMEX_Sam : Also you can push the data via the websocket
[2015-03-24 21:35:05] BitMEX_Sam : Send `{"op": "getSymbol", "args": ["XBU24H", "XBUH15"]}` etc etc
[2015-03-24 21:35:15] BitMEX_Sam : you'll get a nice dump of data you can use to start your deltas
[2015-03-24 21:35:21] BitMEX_Sam : that way you don't have to juggle http and ws
[2015-03-24 21:36:03] relisys : our system is built with a lot of redundancy for data collection
[2015-03-24 21:36:12] BitMEX_Sam : Understandable
[2015-03-24 21:36:33] relisys : we have automated failovers and resets based off various triggers
[2015-03-24 21:36:43] BitMEX_Sam : We occasionally deploy updates and the websocket will disconnect - something to keep in mind, your impl should reconnect
[2015-03-24 21:36:53] BitMEX_Sam : Working on a zero-downtime solution for that but it's nontrivial with the subscription logic
[2015-03-24 21:36:56] relisys : oh yeah, no worries there
[2015-03-24 21:37:11] relisys : there is no such thing as a websocket client as zero downtime
[2015-03-24 21:37:15] BitMEX_Sam : True story
[2015-03-24 21:37:32] BitMEX_Sam : Sounds like you're set. Sorry, have to run - email me if anything comes up
[2015-03-24 21:37:40] relisys : will do, thanks
[2015-03-24 21:37:52] BitMEX_Sam : And for anyone else sitting on this chat, if you're integrating with our API, I'm here, just send an email
[2015-03-24 21:37:55] BitMEX_Sam : Have a good night
[2015-03-24 21:38:10] BitWise : cya
[2015-03-24 23:17:25] relisys : sent you an email Sam
[2015-03-24 23:39:56] BitMEX_Arthur : Morning traders
[2015-03-25 04:03:10] goat : hola
[2015-03-25 04:03:27] goat : it will be interesting to see what kind of damage the bears do today
[2015-03-25 04:19:21] BitMEX_Arthur : rates on bfx spiked over night
[2015-03-25 09:49:38] BitWise : Morning goat
[2015-03-25 09:52:24] BitWise : swap rates you mean?
[2015-03-25 09:52:33] BitMEX_Arthur : yea
[2015-03-25 09:54:04] BitWise : The usd rate spiked yesterday and the btc swap this morning early. Seem near normal again.
[2015-03-25 09:54:27] BitWise : btc swap a bit higher though.
[2015-03-25 09:55:10] BitWise : Do you use the sheet to calculate them?
[2015-03-25 10:13:50] BitMEX_Arthur : BitWise: calculate what the swap rates?
[2015-03-25 10:14:24] BitMEX_Arthur : Yes the XBU and XBT pricing sheets pull in the latest swap values
[2015-03-25 10:15:32] BitWise : K, thx
[2015-03-25 13:46:06] KB : k
[2015-03-25 13:46:57] KB : Hello Arthur
[2015-03-25 13:47:02] BitMEX_Arthur : Hi
[2015-03-25 13:47:06] KB : what orders are just during a Margin Call?
[2015-03-25 13:47:28] KB : do you just drop market orders into the order book?
[2015-03-25 13:47:37] KB : or do you leave limit orders like OKCoin?
[2015-03-25 13:48:15] BitMEX_Arthur : we place small limit orders in an attempt to liquidate as little as possible so that your account meets the maintenance margin
[2015-03-25 13:48:43] KB : what do you do when there are no fills as there is currently very little volume?
[2015-03-25 13:49:47] BitMEX_Arthur : The volume isn't what triggers a margin call
[2015-03-25 13:50:18] KB : what I mean is, if place limit orders, some one needs to fill them
[2015-03-25 13:50:24] KB : but what if no one does?
[2015-03-25 13:51:14] KB : do you keep moving the limit orders until it does? Isn't that going to lead to very poor fills if the order book is thin?
[2015-03-25 13:51:40] BitMEX_Arthur : All liquidation orders are fill or kill
[2015-03-25 13:52:21] BitMEX_Arthur : as to the exact algo we don't disclose so as to discourage gaming of the process
[2015-03-25 13:52:45] BitMEX_Arthur : but our goal is to liquidate as little as possible of your positions
[2015-03-25 13:52:46] KB : What triggers a margin call then? Last trade on Bitmex or Bitfinex?
[2015-03-25 13:52:59] BitMEX_Arthur : on the futures contract on BitMEX
[2015-03-25 13:53:53] KB : couldn't I trigger liquidiation of other traders by just trading at price far away in a thin order book?
[2015-03-25 13:54:37] KB : at the same time placing large limit orders below/above that to catch forced liquidations for very prices
[2015-03-25 13:54:53] KB : ...very good prices
[2015-03-25 13:55:10] BitMEX_Arthur : We don't do market orders like some platforms and have Limit Up/Down to prevent gappy movements
[2015-03-25 13:56:56] KB : I think it's still game-able with the current liquidity in the order book
[2015-03-26 14:40:59] j8 : KB: what you describe has happened. not to me personally but someone in the chat.
[2015-03-26 14:45:06] j8 : found it: march 4th on XBTH15
[2015-03-26 14:48:52] j8 : "Went from 280 to 240 with 1 contract traded"
[2015-03-26 19:11:45] rhk : bitmex guys.. XBU24H isnt visible from the instrument dropdown
[2015-03-26 21:52:32] KB : thanks for the confirmation, j8
[2015-03-26 23:21:33] BitMEX_Arthur : rhk: thanks will look into that
[2015-03-26 23:46:27] TrevinHofmann : >Went from 280 to 240 with 1 contract traded" Yeah, that was me. Lost a good chunk getting liquidated even though the actual market was nowhere near putting me in a margin call.
[2015-03-26 23:46:37] TrevinHofmann : Oh well :| The order books here are still thin. That's how it goes.
[2015-03-26 23:52:23] BitMEX_Arthur : We hear you guys; our number one goal is getting more market makers on the platform
[2015-03-27 01:10:37] KB : Hey Trevin, how exactly was your margin call executed? Where did you get filled?
[2015-03-27 02:41:43] relisys : anyone from bitmex around?
[2015-03-27 02:41:52] BitMEX_Arthur : Hi
[2015-03-27 02:41:56] BitMEX_Arthur : how can i help
[2015-03-27 02:42:06] relisys : Hi Arthur, I'm Rob from Coinigy
[2015-03-27 02:42:09] BitMEX_Arthur : Hi
[2015-03-27 02:42:12] relisys : I'm integrating BitMEX for our site
[2015-03-27 02:42:19] relisys : are you familiar with Coinigy?
[2015-03-27 02:42:40] BitMEX_Arthur : I have taken a cruise around your site, Sam has been working with you on integration
[2015-03-27 02:43:06] relisys : I just need to what know what 4-letter code you want us to use for your exchange
[2015-03-27 02:43:14] relisys : probably BMEX or BITM
[2015-03-27 02:43:22] BitMEX_Arthur : BMEX please
[2015-03-27 02:43:32] relisys : that's what I was thinking too
[2015-03-27 02:43:34] relisys : sounds good
[2015-03-27 02:44:12] BitMEX_Arthur : how long before you integration is finished
[2015-03-27 02:45:02] relisys : data feeds/charting should be up tonight I think
[2015-03-27 02:45:27] relisys : balances, trading are going to be on hold for a little bit while we finish up some others that are ahead of you on the list for those features
[2015-03-27 02:45:40] BitMEX_Arthur : awesome
[2015-03-27 02:50:07] relisys : XBU/H15
[2015-03-27 02:50:08] relisys : XBU/24H
[2015-03-27 02:50:08] relisys : XBU/J15
[2015-03-27 02:50:12] relisys : that's how I plan to list the markets
[2015-03-27 02:50:19] relisys : is that ok?
[2015-03-27 02:50:47] relisys : BVOL/J15
[2015-03-27 02:50:47] relisys : XBT/H15
[2015-03-27 02:53:36] BitMEX_Arthur : why the "/"
[2015-03-27 02:56:19] relisys : because it's kinda of a standard for our site and I'm concerned about it causing issues if it's not there
[2015-03-27 02:56:26] relisys : let me ask William his opinion
[2015-03-27 02:56:36] relisys : he's more familiar with the frontend
[2015-03-27 02:56:58] BitMEX_Arthur : ok i assume you are pulling the active instruments table and getting the live tickers from there
[2015-03-27 02:57:06] BitMEX_Arthur : as every month a few contracts expire
[2015-03-27 02:59:25] relisys : William also expressed concern about possible ui issues without a primary and secondary code
[2015-03-27 02:59:36] relisys : i am yes
[2015-03-27 02:59:43] relisys : then i'm taking the "rootSymbol" from the API
[2015-03-27 02:59:54] relisys : and using that as the primary currency code (the part to the left of the /)
[2015-03-27 03:00:07] BitMEX_Arthur : right
[2015-03-27 03:00:13] relisys : everything else is to the right of the /
[2015-03-27 03:00:58] relisys : i realize you guys don't list it that way but we have 24 other exchanges that do and listing the primary and secondary is kind of part of our UI
[2015-03-27 03:01:19] relisys : hmm, actually
[2015-03-27 03:01:26] relisys : we have an override field for the nav
[2015-03-27 03:01:43] relisys : so I should be able to list it how you have it there
[2015-03-27 03:02:11] relisys : that is a recent addition, kinda forgot about it :P
[2015-03-27 03:02:25] BitMEX_Arthur : nw
[2015-03-27 03:02:31] BitMEX_Arthur : i'm not the api expert
[2015-03-27 12:01:02] BitMEX_Wally : `XBUH15` settled at `247.6`
[2015-03-27 12:01:18] BitMEX_Wally : `XBTH15` settled at `247.6` too
[2015-03-27 12:01:35] BitMEX_Wally : `BVOLH15` settled at `58.96`
[2015-03-27 12:01:55] goat : nice!
[2015-03-27 12:02:26] goat : perfect timing too, it will be really interesting to see what happens with GBTC today
[2015-03-27 12:02:46] goat : i think the time for shorting (and hedging long with bitmex) might be over
[2015-03-27 12:36:47] rhk : when is the next time that withdrawals will be processed?
[2015-03-27 12:37:32] BitMEX_Wally : rhk: As it is settlement day today, we will process them again in a few hours
[2015-03-27 12:38:35] rhk : ok thx
[2015-03-27 12:38:43] rhk : would be good to s h
[2015-03-27 12:38:50] rhk : schedule them an hour or so after settlement
[2015-03-27 12:39:28] BitMEX_Wally : Good idea
[2015-03-27 13:29:17] goat : Weird, the entire interface just froze for me
[2015-03-27 13:29:25] goat : i had to close the tab and re-open
[2015-03-27 13:29:29] goat : just a fyi for you guys
[2015-03-27 13:29:47] j8 : some margin calls on xbu24h? below 200 for a sec
[2015-03-27 13:32:26] KB : how do you know some one was margin called?
[2015-03-27 13:32:48] goat : I wish i had some lower bids in there lol
[2015-03-27 13:33:52] j8 : just guessing
[2015-03-27 13:34:04] goat : it looks like it was one by the orders
[2015-03-27 13:34:05] j8 : the sort of thing we were talking about yesterday
[2015-03-27 13:34:13] goat : it happened to me before too
[2015-03-27 13:34:28] goat : the price was like $100 from spot
[2015-03-27 13:34:32] goat : now i just use less margin
[2015-03-27 13:35:09] KB : goat, where you margin called again?
[2015-03-27 13:39:09] goat : no it happened to me a while back
[2015-03-27 13:39:25] goat : since then, i don't think i have been
[2015-03-27 13:39:32] goat : i dont use much leverage now
[2015-03-27 13:40:02] goat : and am probably switching up my futures strategy in the next few days, going to review things this weekend
[2015-03-27 13:40:41] KB : Bitmex, can you get your market makers to give me a 5-10k bid in XBU24H for a decent price?
[2015-03-27 13:41:31] j8 : why not place orders?
[2015-03-27 13:45:08] KB : they would not be filled
[2015-03-27 13:45:17] KB : almost no one trades it
[2015-03-27 13:45:58] BitMEX_Arthur : KB: place some orders in the book you will be surprised
[2015-03-27 13:46:19] j8 : trading it now, there are some good bargains!
[2015-03-27 13:46:35] KB : put up an offer for 5k
[2015-03-27 13:47:29] j8 : no :)
[2015-03-27 13:48:39] KB : I mean, I did
[2015-03-27 13:48:48] j8 : lol i see
[2015-03-27 13:48:53] KB : I placed an order for 5k
[2015-03-27 13:49:34] KB : Arthur, are you aware that wash sales are possible with your trading engine?
[2015-03-27 13:49:50] BitMEX_Arthur : you mean trading against yourself?
[2015-03-27 13:49:54] KB : yes
[2015-03-27 13:50:04] KB : I did not want to cause problems, but just to make sure, it tried it out a few times
