This is a mirror of the original BitMEX trollbox archive that used to be online here.
BitMEX disabled their archive after the DDOS attack so I have decided to make my mirror publicly available.

Well now, a few days after I made this mirror available to the public, the original archive from BitMEX is online again.
But since it is still limited (neutered to the last few hundred messages) I will keep my FULL mirror alive.

You have access to more than 50 million trollbox posts. This is more than 7 gigabyte of data hosted on a $5 server so please be patient or consider a donation

[2016-12-31 19:31:57] Turbo : well, I've been out of the market for a couple days now, just watching, we shall see
[2016-12-31 19:32:35] MikeHunt : Turbo: imo if it was going to go up major style it would have already
[2016-12-31 19:32:47] Tr : its not going down, huobi wont let it
[2016-12-31 19:33:17] Tr : any 5 yuan move down instantly moved with bot buy walls that reverse the direction back up

[2016-12-31 19:33:49] MikeHunt : well a major crash is also precipitated by an event so it may just bumble down slowly back to the mean
[2016-12-31 19:34:01] MikeHunt : as nothings happened so far
[2016-12-31 19:35:20] Turbo : heading out for a bit, ttyl

[2016-12-31 19:36:04] Nooby : Edcon is coming soon guys! Time to buy eth!!!
[2016-12-31 19:36:15] Tr : there is not dip
[2016-12-31 19:36:26] Tr : if it goes to like 6820 watch instantly
[2016-12-31 19:36:33] Tr : 1min graph

[2016-12-31 19:36:45] Tr : china style
[2016-12-31 19:36:57] Nooby : Less than 15 days for EDCON... ether to the moon!!
[2016-12-31 19:37:31] Tr : ethere cant go up
[2016-12-31 19:37:34] Tr : no china to pump it
[2016-12-31 19:37:35] Tr : too bad
[2016-12-31 19:37:49] MikeHunt : Tr: i think whats happened now is a microcosm of nov 30th - dec 5th
[2016-12-31 19:38:05] MikeHunt : happening*
[2016-12-31 19:38:16] Tr : what do u mean
[2016-12-31 19:38:26] tb : you mean etc to the moon?
[2016-12-31 19:38:28] Nooby : Oh yeah not true at all!! Ether will pump soon, lot of thing will be announced in edcon soon
[2016-12-31 19:38:46] Tr : you cant pump a coin on western exchange...
[2016-12-31 19:38:59] MikeHunt : Nooby: problem with ETC is they condemned it by bailing out the DAO and BTC is going to copy them
[2016-12-31 19:39:31] Nooby : ETC is not ETH ...
[2016-12-31 19:40:21] Tr : china is scared as shit of ETH
[2016-12-31 19:40:38] Tr : "no mining soon? we are fucked, ching chong, better pump btc with our crooked exchange"
[2016-12-31 19:41:15] Nooby : Edcon will change their point of view, i buy it that s all :)
[2016-12-31 19:41:54] MikeHunt : Nooby: Eth is what i meant
[2016-12-31 19:42:00] MikeHunt : Nooby: ETC? hmm ill go look
[2016-12-31 19:42:32] MikeHunt : yeah ETC has a chance as its the untainted version
[2016-12-31 19:42:43] Tr : lol
[2016-12-31 19:42:46] Tr : ETC is a scam
[2016-12-31 19:42:50] MikeHunt : but it still suffers from the same problem as other altcoins that bitcoin can simply copy it
[2016-12-31 19:43:10] Nooby : ETC is not supported by too much miners
[2016-12-31 19:45:04] Tr : look huobi 5min
[2016-12-31 19:45:07] MikeHunt : Nooby: both etc/eth are dead imo
[2016-12-31 19:45:07] Tr : such a fake buy wall lmao
[2016-12-31 19:45:32] Tr : eth is freaking great to use though
[2016-12-31 19:45:36] Tr : pretty much instant transactions
[2016-12-31 19:45:48] Tr : after it btc feels like using vhs
[2016-12-31 19:45:58] Nooby : No, ether will rise again, DAO projects are coming back soon and I think will work fine this time
[2016-12-31 19:46:03] MikeHunt : Tr: yeh i expect some altcoins like monero etc. have their uses but bitcoin can just copy them
[2016-12-31 19:46:28] Tr : MikeHunt coding is a little more complicated than jsut copy pasting work of others
[2016-12-31 19:46:39] MikeHunt : Nooby: and if it doesn't work they'll just bail it out again?
[2016-12-31 19:47:01] MikeHunt : Tr: i thought the hardest part is acception with the miners?
[2016-12-31 19:47:30] Tr : MikeHunt not sure if refunding investors counts as bailout there
[2016-12-31 19:47:31] REKT : Liquidated long on `XBCH17`: sell 5 @ 7080.1
[2016-12-31 19:47:41] Nooby : And so what? Did you loose something last time? I didn't! I get all my ETH back so... I found you don't try you never succeed
[2016-12-31 19:48:05] Naloxone : New Year dump!
[2016-12-31 19:48:15] Tr : bitcoin forked in his early days to save the network from a bug
[2016-12-31 19:48:24] Tr : doesnt mean its "tainted"
[2016-12-31 19:48:46] REKT : Liquidated long on `XBTH17`: sell 14213 @ 1006.57
[2016-12-31 19:48:56] REKT : Liquidated long on `XBTH17`: sell 6000 @ 1005.62
[2016-12-31 19:49:24] MikeHunt : Tr: imo with eth it wasnt a bug
[2016-12-31 19:49:36] MikeHunt : Tr: it functioned as intended but the results were unpopular
[2016-12-31 19:49:46] MikeHunt : Tr: should gox have been bailed out?
[2016-12-31 19:50:36] Tr : thats not really a good analogy
[2016-12-31 19:50:38] Tr : maybe
[2016-12-31 19:51:00] Tr : thats assuming that gox was really hacked
[2016-12-31 19:51:06] Tr : and wasnt just a ponzi
[2016-12-31 19:51:58] Tr : imagine if all money "stolen" from gox were locked in a accout for 30days +
[2016-12-31 19:52:08] Tr : and you could return it to the customers without rolling back the transactions
[2016-12-31 19:52:13] Tr : looks like a pretty good deal tome
[2016-12-31 19:53:01] BitMEX_Sam : It's clearly had some undesirable effects on ETH
[2016-12-31 19:53:25] Tr : i think hardowrk were met very well by the market
[2016-12-31 19:53:29] BitMEX_Sam : It's disingenuous IMO to say "code is law and can't be changed" and then say "well, unless it has undesired effects" when it does something you don't like.
[2016-12-31 19:54:10] BitMEX_Sam : Of course, it points to a more fundamental CS problem at its core: it is extremely difficult to write "correct" programs, and your programs must be correct if you're going to use them as immutable contracts.
[2016-12-31 19:54:11] orly : altering the history of a blockchain by community consensus without an actual bug is bad enough
[2016-12-31 19:54:30] MikeHunt : Tr: perhaps the analogy was poor but my point is popularism shouldn't *trump* reason
[2016-12-31 19:54:32] orly : the fact that it happened in the interest of a rich minority makes it even worse
[2016-12-31 19:54:45] MikeHunt : orly: +1
[2016-12-31 19:54:52] BitMEX_Sam : Emin Gun Sirer and his team at Cornell is doing a good job of attempting to formally verify these contracts but evidence points to Solidity being fundamentally broken.
[2016-12-31 19:54:53] Tr : how it was the interest of rich minority
[2016-12-31 19:54:53] Tr : wtf
[2016-12-31 19:55:00] Tr : thats the most retarded thing i've heard
[2016-12-31 19:55:15] MikeHunt : Tr: apparently some of the eth devs were in on the contract and got raped
[2016-12-31 19:55:44] Tr : perphaps you should read liek btc forums
[2016-12-31 19:55:47] Tr : less*
[2016-12-31 19:56:17] BitMEX_Sam : All evidence points to it being nearly impossible to create Turing-complete smart contracts without serious security risk, but of course they become much less useful if so
[2016-12-31 19:57:17] orly : we can't even create offline, centralized programs without bugs
[2016-12-31 19:57:26] BitMEX_Sam : Exactly.
[2016-12-31 19:57:45] BitMEX_Sam : You need a language that can be formally verified, but such languages are incredibly difficult to develop and develop for
[2016-12-31 19:57:57] BitMEX_Sam : It's certainly beyond the reach of the average JS hacker, for instance.
[2016-12-31 19:58:19] BitMEX_Sam : This is a great article about what it might take to actually produce reliable software: https://www.fastcompany.com/28121/they-write-right-stuff
[2016-12-31 19:59:34] MikeHunt : perhaps the best way is to assume it will be hacked and have an insurance pool
[2016-12-31 20:01:28] BitMEX_Sam : http://babelfish.arc.nasa.gov/trac/jpf/wiki/WikiStart is an interesting project that came out of this idea
[2016-12-31 20:02:22] BitMEX_Sam : Perhaps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Pathfinder is more clear because their Wiki is not
[2016-12-31 20:03:09] BitMEX_Sam : But yes, I agree with that basic premise @MikeHunt; any system using Smart Contract *must* accept that bugs are present, not only in the runtime and blockchain but in the contracts themselves, and must be able to compensate for it.
[2016-12-31 20:03:16] dodic : ETH is a fiat
[2016-12-31 20:03:21] nOgAnOo : Good morning, Sam. <3
[2016-12-31 20:03:26] BitMEX_Sam : Unfortunately that means trusted human intervention is essentially required, and who gets to run it?
[2016-12-31 20:03:43] dodic : foundation determines monetary policy
[2016-12-31 20:04:04] BitMEX_Sam : Morning @nOgAnOo
[2016-12-31 20:04:30] nOgAnOo : I'm busy turning my 2 remaining dollars into 10,000
[2016-12-31 20:04:42] nOgAnOo : Gonna hedge with a Steemit article. :)
[2016-12-31 20:05:25] nOgAnOo : I just found out my Camel Cash collection is worth like 1000 dollars on ebay.. been collecting it buying bulk auctions for a few months.. gonna make 20x gains on that.
[2016-12-31 20:09:59] orly : BitMEX_Sam: itneresting article about the shuttle software
[2016-12-31 20:10:18] BitMEX_Sam : orly: Yeah that's one of the best.
[2016-12-31 20:10:26] orly : first, i think we need to stop this madness of duplication in the industry
[2016-12-31 20:10:58] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah - everything gets rewritten over and over again, often buggier
[2016-12-31 20:11:05] orly : like, why the hell do we need hundreds of competing products, reimplementations of the same thing in dozens of languages
[2016-12-31 20:11:23] BitMEX_Sam : See also https://www.jwz.org/doc/cadt.html
[2016-12-31 20:11:28] BitMEX_Sam : I think there are good reasons and bad.
[2016-12-31 20:11:52] BitMEX_Sam : Sometimes, like in the case of Rust, the software community as a whole has finally decided to recognize that the process itself is broken, and the only way to fix it is to think differently
[2016-12-31 20:12:16] BitMEX_Sam : And we may see rewrites of many core pieces of software in the near future as a result, certainly for the better.
[2016-12-31 20:12:27] BitMEX_Sam : In the other case, there's always Atwood's law.
[2016-12-31 20:12:29] BitMEX_Sam : I'm guilty of that one.
[2016-12-31 20:13:17] orly : yeah that's fine, I mean, Rust does add safety over 40+ year old languages designed for the same purpose
[2016-12-31 20:13:35] orly : it's fine if we can improve on things every couple dozen years
[2016-12-31 20:14:41] BitMEX_Sam : Another big problem is that it's just downright __hard__ to build solid software that can actually be reused
[2016-12-31 20:15:04] cryptobull : perfect dip, buys filled :D
[2016-12-31 20:15:05] BitMEX_Sam : And you often end up building so many options and edge cases into the damned thing that someone else pops up with a "like X, but lightweight!" version of your lib
[2016-12-31 20:15:07] orly : but how much effort has gone into rebuilding the same thing in python, ruby, javascript, what have you
[2016-12-31 20:15:13] orly : they are essentially the same language
[2016-12-31 20:15:26] BitMEX_Sam : Sort of. Of course the details are what matter
[2016-12-31 20:15:34] BitMEX_Sam : Perhaps we'll see some consolidation with WASM
[2016-12-31 20:15:51] BitMEX_Sam : Part of the reason everything gets rewritten in JS is so we can run it in the browser, but we're coming very close to no longer needing the rewrite
[2016-12-31 20:16:22] BitMEX_Sam : There are certain shell programs I'd love to use in the browser, for instance, even as core BitMEX libs, but today there's just too much overhead
[2016-12-31 20:16:51] BitMEX_Sam : That will change in 2017, though. I'm expecting major strides to be taken on the web, and BitMEX itself to become much faster by this time next year.
[2016-12-31 20:17:38] startChat : What on the web is changing?
[2016-12-31 20:18:18] BitMEX_Sam : WASM is coming and will likely be stable enough for some experimental use in a few months
[2016-12-31 20:18:39] javierstone : uhoh longs
[2016-12-31 20:18:40] BitMEX_Sam : ReactJS, which is the core lib we're using for the UI here, will be getting a new priority-based renderer that will allow us to almost always hit 60fps
[2016-12-31 20:19:03] BitMEX_Sam : We might also be able to farm much of the render work off onto multiple threads soon.
[2016-12-31 20:19:13] BitMEX_Sam : On top of that, perhaps we'll see a semi-stable version of Servo by then.
[2016-12-31 20:19:47] BitMEX_Sam : The world has been multicore since 2003 but software is still catching up
[2016-12-31 20:20:05] orly : I think the web itself is probably the biggest failure of the industry
[2016-12-31 20:20:19] orly : i mean, in a sense, it's good, multiplatform and all that
[2016-12-31 20:20:36] orly : but we've spent decades reimplementing everything just so it runs in browsers
[2016-12-31 20:20:40] BitMEX_Sam : I agree, it's simultaneously awful and great
[2016-12-31 20:20:47] orly : in the mean time, browsers have become beasts
[2016-12-31 20:20:52] BitMEX_Sam : It's great in that we've finally figured out a way to run untrusted code pretty reliably
[2016-12-31 20:21:03] BitMEX_Sam : It's awful in that it so clearly wasn't made for that, it's slow, layout is still awful and there's a million gotchas
[2016-12-31 20:21:28] BitMEX_Sam : But it's getting a lot better. Content-Security-Policy and Flexbox are two of my recent favorites
[2016-12-31 20:21:38] BitMEX_Sam : And of course, the whole Babel ecosystem, Flowtype, etc
[2016-12-31 20:21:38] javierstone : 89?
[2016-12-31 20:21:41] javierstone : do we go down
[2016-12-31 20:21:49] javierstone : oh yes we do
[2016-12-31 20:22:34] orly : yeah but we're cramming an operating system into an application that was designed for documents :/
[2016-12-31 20:23:09] orly : it's kinda hard, the whole industry is like 50 year old, yet we can't just start over and say, guys, we fcked up, here's the new os everyone uses from now on

[2016-12-31 21:52:49] Chumba : looks shit
[2016-12-31 21:53:08] nOgAnOo : Unless I plan a southern farm with citrus. Already working on growing a lemon orchard and exotic fruits.
[2016-12-31 21:53:10] Angelika : nOgAnOo: I thought you have the land already
[2016-12-31 21:53:15] Angelika : so where is this land?
[2016-12-31 21:53:25] nOgAnOo : The land is Wisconsin
[2016-12-31 21:53:33] nOgAnOo : But I want a southern plot for citrus trees
[2016-12-31 21:53:36] sleger : all of it thats huge

[2016-12-31 21:54:56] sleger : nOgAnOo: do you have to pay real estate tax in the US on undeveloped land ?
[2016-12-31 21:55:40] nOgAnOo : sleger, my parents own the land so I don't know anything about that.. but I think he pays 500 dollars a year tax on the 40 acres of land.. 1.6 acres of it is a field considered "farm land"
[2016-12-31 21:55:59] nOgAnOo : I could ask him if you really need to know.
[2016-12-31 21:56:38] sleger : just curious, but so the answer seems to be yes, but its low
[2016-12-31 21:56:52] nOgAnOo : it's 35 miles from any city
[2016-12-31 21:57:02] nOgAnOo : Good place to start a Jesus Cult

[2016-12-31 21:58:21] nOgAnOo : With a little bit of Disney
[2016-12-31 21:59:02] nOgAnOo : 60mph go karts.. hang gliding.. hovercrafts.. hoverboards.. jet packs.. private helicopters..

[2016-12-31 21:59:45] nOgAnOo : Salad bars with live greens. (my own little twist)
[2016-12-31 21:59:59] nOgAnOo : The salad bar was invented in my area actually.
[2016-12-31 22:00:02] nOgAnOo : So it's fitting.
[2016-12-31 22:00:34] nOgAnOo : Ok guys I'm all in short. Let's dump this wreck of a blockchain.
[2016-12-31 22:00:57] nOgAnOo : Dump it back to 10 dollars where it belongs.
[2016-12-31 22:02:09] $$ : lol nOgAnOo
[2016-12-31 22:02:44] $$ : no one wants to go to wisconsin in the winter
[2016-12-31 22:03:17] nOgAnOo : That's why I'm thinking down south.. plus my land doesn't have a waterfall on it.. and that's a top priority for me
[2016-12-31 22:03:26] nOgAnOo : I would have to build it artificially otherwise
[2016-12-31 22:03:44] nOgAnOo : but fun can be had in winter too
[2016-12-31 22:04:02] nOgAnOo : snow angels.. snow cones.. snowboarding.. snowballs..
[2016-12-31 22:04:48] nOgAnOo : Yes China Dump!
[2016-12-31 22:04:54] rms : i'm out of position totally for the first time in a month
[2016-12-31 22:04:54] rms : feels good
[2016-12-31 22:08:20] nOgAnOo : I see strong indications of a Hill and Valley formation on the 1 minute
[2016-12-31 22:08:40] tb : rms: did you lose your place on the leaderboard?
[2016-12-31 22:08:54] tb : or just hidden your name?
[2016-12-31 22:11:35] rms : hidden. i moved up a bit. ;)
[2016-12-31 22:12:48] rms : but i think chance of dumps until the holiday is over is too high to stay long, and i don't short bitcoin ever
[2016-12-31 22:14:21] tb : nice
[2016-12-31 22:14:25] tb : what's your typical trade size?
[2016-12-31 22:14:38] tb : in terms of notional
[2016-12-31 22:15:28] rms : i play along with whatever the market maker is doing, 20 or 25k contracts
[2016-12-31 22:16:06] javierstone : rms: how can u tell what the market maker is doing?
[2016-12-31 22:16:23] nOgAnOo : his order size
[2016-12-31 22:17:21] tb : so you only hold 25k contracts at atime?
[2016-12-31 22:17:57] rms : no, i've held more than a million
[2016-12-31 22:18:14] tb : jesus lol
[2016-12-31 22:18:21] tb : at what kind of leverage?
[2016-12-31 22:18:31] rms : 5-7x
[2016-12-31 22:19:01] rms : margin requirements get way more expensive here when you have more open contracts, so you can't really sanely do 20x at high volume
[2016-12-31 22:19:13] tb : yeah
[2016-12-31 22:19:23] tb : and the initial margin fucks you hard if you get liquidated
[2016-12-31 22:19:30] tb : esp when your risk limit is higher
[2016-12-31 22:21:00] nOgAnOo : rms, I'm trying to trade my way up from 40 cents to 10,000 dollars.. I'm up to 3.50 right now in 1 day
[2016-12-31 22:21:18] MikeHunt : nOgAnOo: but will it last 2 weeks though? :)
[2016-12-31 22:21:30] nOgAnOo : i hope so. don't be so cynical, Mike
[2016-12-31 22:21:37] rms : short REP while it's above spot then
[2016-12-31 22:21:43] rms : is my tip
[2016-12-31 22:21:44] rms : ;)
[2016-12-31 22:23:47] MikeHunt : nOgAnOo: i hope it does its just the way you said about jesus being the reason it will go up that threw me off a bit
[2016-12-31 22:24:20] nOgAnOo : Mike, my live has been miraculously blessed already. I have no reason to believe that will change.
[2016-12-31 22:24:38] nOgAnOo : I went from having nothing last year to having nearly everything I want right now.
[2016-12-31 22:24:42] justinlooking : rms: what's ur rekt record :)
[2016-12-31 22:25:09] nOgAnOo : rektord
[2016-12-31 22:25:54] zach719 : i dont understand now
[2016-12-31 22:26:02] zach719 : its just holding steady at 960
[2016-12-31 22:26:17] zach719 : and i dont wanna buy in cause i keep thinking its gonna dump but it never does
[2016-12-31 22:26:25] MikeHunt : zach719: maybe its like titanic wen its up in the air during the sinking, its just... waiting
[2016-12-31 22:26:55] zach719 : MikeHunt: lmao
[2016-12-31 22:27:32] nOgAnOo : Ok I'm up to 4 dollars already! up 10x from yesterday
[2016-12-31 22:27:42] rms : i cross margin everything so don't really get rekt'd
[2016-12-31 22:27:55] nOgAnOo : have you ever gotten liquidated rms?
[2016-12-31 22:28:02] rms : maybe 3 btc worth on etc?
[2016-12-31 22:28:17] nOgAnOo : I had my worst day ever 2 days ago trading overtired
[2016-12-31 22:28:20] nOgAnOo : lost 230 dollars.
[2016-12-31 22:28:21] rms : which just happened cause i took it off cross margin to go to sleep
[2016-12-31 22:28:29] rms : and it would have woken up at a profit if i left it at cross
[2016-12-31 22:28:49] nOgAnOo : That's happened to me many times.. barely hitting a margin call then I would have been in huge profit..
[2016-12-31 22:29:00] nOgAnOo : overleveraging.. I am new to trading tho so it's expected
[2016-12-31 22:29:36] MikeHunt : hopefully new years crash can save me or i might get rekt
[2016-12-31 22:29:39] nOgAnOo : This is my favorite platform to trade on out of the dozens I've been on in the past
[2016-12-31 22:29:49] nOgAnOo : I used to do altcoins.. since the first exchange actually.'
[2016-12-31 22:30:22] nOgAnOo : Now that I understand the mechanics and order fee system.
[2016-12-31 22:30:59] zach719 : nOgAnOo: i agree
[2016-12-31 22:31:05] nOgAnOo : buy my 222 pls someone
[2016-12-31 22:31:07] nOgAnOo : :)
[2016-12-31 22:31:14] tb : my favorite is when you get rekt
[2016-12-31 22:31:38] zach719 : tb: amen
[2016-12-31 22:31:39] tb : and buy back from the liquidation bot at better than your liquidation price
[2016-12-31 22:33:06] tb : s/liquidation price/bankruptcy price/
[2016-12-31 22:33:29] nOgAnOo : I need multiple whales as friends..
[2016-12-31 22:33:35] nOgAnOo : and to fill my tiny orders for a while
[2016-12-31 22:33:47] nOgAnOo : and let me know when they are making moves
[2016-12-31 22:33:56] nOgAnOo : that would ensure my success
[2016-12-31 22:34:09] nOgAnOo : *does whale call*
[2016-12-31 22:36:49] Angelika : Did the 20k MM increase to 25k

[2016-12-31 22:52:38] BTCDJS : Mewn
[2016-12-31 22:52:46] Ra : How come my buy orders get rejected because apparently will "lead to immdiate liquidation"" but liq rate is dollars cheaper?
[2016-12-31 22:52:57] evilminer : Bitfinex yawning.
[2016-12-31 22:57:46] nOgAnOo : Does the bull trend have legs or will the dead cat bounce? You decide!
