This is a mirror of the original BitMEX trollbox archive that used to be online here.
BitMEX disabled their archive after the DDOS attack so I have decided to make my mirror publicly available.

Well now, a few days after I made this mirror available to the public, the original archive from BitMEX is online again.
But since it is still limited (neutered to the last few hundred messages) I will keep my FULL mirror alive.

You have access to more than 50 million trollbox posts. This is more than 7 gigabyte of data hosted on a $5 server so please be patient or consider a donation

[2015-09-17 21:19:03] vbmithr : I have been developing a service for some time
[2015-09-17 21:19:27] vbmithr : It acts as a connector between Sierra Chart (charting software) and this exchange
[2015-09-17 21:19:47] vbmithr : I'm working on connecting okcoin as well.
[2015-09-17 21:20:20] vbmithr : It works quite well already, but has not been tested much
[2015-09-17 21:20:33] vbmithr : Basically, I need beta testers
[2015-09-17 21:21:00] vbmithr : For now it runs on BitMEX testnet.
[2015-09-17 21:21:15] vbmithr : If you are interested, it's quite simple.
[2015-09-17 21:22:05] vbmithr : 1. Download latest Sierra Chart (sierrachart.com), 2. Create an account at bitsouk.com (the service's website), 3. Use BitMEX (testnet) service in Sierra Chart with your bitsouk id
[2015-09-17 22:10:10] STRML : This gets a big thumbs up from us at BitMEX, vbmithr's connector was working great last I tried it and Sierra Chart is a great tool. Definitely ping him if you try it.
[2015-09-18 00:04:05] SnackyCoins : http://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/PressReleases/pr7231-15 did you guys see
[2015-09-18 00:05:54] BitMEX_Arthur : Interesting
[2015-09-18 00:06:17] SnackyCoins : seems to affect futures/options/swaps
[2015-09-18 00:07:27] SnackyCoins : cause now if it's a commodity then you have to follow those rules, rather than simply following rules for usd interaction? but i have never heard of coinflip, dunno what they did
[2015-09-18 01:27:19] hashman : what time is the settlement?
[2015-09-18 01:27:40] hashman : "Every Friday at 08:00 (12
[2015-09-18 01:27:45] hashman : is what I see...
[2015-09-18 01:27:50] SnackyCoins : 10h 32m
[2015-09-18 01:27:58] SnackyCoins : bitfx.info :)
[2015-09-18 01:30:36] hashman : 10hr 30min to settlement?
[2015-09-18 01:30:37] hashman : cool
[2015-09-18 01:39:56] hashman : 2nd stupid question - where do i see the fees charged on my trades?
[2015-09-18 01:40:47] SnackyCoins : hmm dunno that one :)
[2015-09-18 01:45:09] BitMEX_Arthur : hashman: trade history
[2015-09-18 02:56:02] Matthew.v : I like to use this http://getjumbucks.com/settlement/
[2015-09-18 03:05:50] BitMEX_Arthur : Is that using your ref link ;)
[2015-09-18 03:11:36] Matthew.v : no no..
[2015-09-18 03:11:51] Matthew.v : I am really pissed off. I did this whole bit about bitmex and the mother fuckers cut it from the news segment.
[2015-09-18 05:07:55] germanjew : Here is the bloomberg writeup: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-17/bitcoin-is-officially-a-commodity-according-to-u-s-regulator
[2015-09-18 05:09:01] germanjew : How can the US regulator regulate things outside of their borders? I can understand this being applicable to bitcoin derivative companies inside the US, but not outside of
[2015-09-18 05:09:07] germanjew : or am I wrong?
[2015-09-18 05:41:08] cengel : because they're serving US clients
[2015-09-18 05:52:42] cloud : Fuck regulators
[2015-09-18 05:52:48] cloud : Bitcoin doesn't need them
[2015-09-18 05:53:21] cloud : Permission less systems will make them archaic dinosaurs destined for museums
[2015-09-18 05:55:29] cloud : We will enter a time of great prosperity. No longer will people need regulators to feel safe. The veil will be lifted and outsiders who shun scientific and mathematical progress for religious or moral beliefs will be left destitute. So sayeth the cloud.
[2015-09-18 06:24:12] cengel : or maybe they will arrest us all and we become dissidents
[2015-09-18 08:02:23] priceaction : CFTC Orders Bitcoin Options Trading Platform Operator and its CEO to Cease Illegally Offering Bitcoin Options
[2015-09-18 08:02:32] priceaction : https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/3lc5ke/cftc_orders_bitcoin_options_trading_platform/
[2015-09-18 08:27:32] Matthew.v : holy damn thats big news
[2015-09-18 08:28:48] lolcookie : WHY CANT I SORT MY ORDERS BY PRICE
[2015-09-18 08:34:53] BitMEX_Arthur : You can
[2015-09-18 08:35:00] BitMEX_Arthur : What tab are you talking about?
[2015-09-18 11:48:39] DunningKruger : Hey Bitmex guys: the .XBT2H index details page points to a Bitcoincharts page for BitFinex, this is out of date isn't it? We're using Tradeblock for settlement price now aren't we?
[2015-09-18 12:23:29] cryptosys : is xbt7d going away?
[2015-09-18 12:31:01] BitMEX_Wally : cryptosys: `XBT7D` will realist next Friday
[2015-09-18 12:31:23] BitMEX_Wally : `XBTU15` expires in 7 days so no point having 2 identical contracts
[2015-09-18 12:34:22] cryptosys : That dawned on me after I asked. Thanks
[2015-09-18 15:17:51] dan2015 : hi

[2015-09-18 15:20:50] Guest33884 : down^
[2015-09-18 15:21:18] cryptosys : To get a better idea of overall direction zoom out to 5d or month
[2015-09-18 15:21:43] cryptosys : they charts are also up at tradingview.com

[2015-09-18 15:23:30] cryptosys : good louck
[2015-09-18 15:25:32] dan2015 : ty
[2015-09-18 16:01:12] naturalog : how come eth7d went so high a few hrs ago without eth/btc going such high?
[2015-09-18 16:01:36] naturalog : as i see in polonies, it didnt reach even 400
[2015-09-18 16:01:39] naturalog : x
[2015-09-18 17:20:01] cryptocoin : does Bitmex have affiliate banners?
[2015-09-18 20:03:51] trjn : Can you explain the relationship between margin/maintenance margin/leverage to me?
[2015-09-18 20:04:14] trjn : I see 25:1 trading with 20% maintenance margin
[2015-09-18 20:04:51] trjn : Assuming I have 0.04 BTC I should be able to open a 1 BTC position, but what is left with which I hold margin (besides the collateral)
[2015-09-18 20:13:05] priceaction : ETH getting trashed so hard, almost sorry
[2015-09-18 20:47:41] zanza : ETH always seemed like vaporware to me
[2015-09-19 00:03:33] muirtastic : buying ETH at .006 and taking my eye off of it is probably my worst trade this year
[2015-09-19 00:55:37] BitMEX_Wally : trjn: The XBU instruments have a 30% initial margin requirement, and and 20% maintenance margin requirement, so these only have a initial leverage of 3.3x and a maximum leverage of 5x
[2015-09-19 00:56:15] BitMEX_Wally : trjn: The XBT instruments have a 4% initial margin requirement and a 1% maintenance margin requirement, so these have an initial leverage of 25x and a maximum leverage of 100x
[2015-09-19 00:57:12] BitMEX_Wally : If you have 0.04 XBT and open a position worth 1.00 XBT in a DPE instrument like XBTU15 then the full 0.04 XBT is held
[2015-09-19 02:30:03] mitzip : How much does bitmex still depend on bitfinex for pricing? looking through the docs swap rates and last transaction price are still showing to be from bitfinex
[2015-09-19 02:40:26] BitMEX_Arthur : mitzip: We use TradeBlock's XBX Index
[2015-09-19 02:49:03] mitzip : what about for swap rates to calculate fair value?
[2015-09-19 02:49:36] BitMEX_Arthur : The fair basis interest rate is set manually by us
[2015-09-19 02:52:27] mitzip : what do you guys take into consideration in that rate? I can't find it now, but I thought I read that it was the amount of interest you could get on swaps between now and the contract settlement
[2015-09-19 02:52:43] mitzip : I see on the DPE page now that the fair basis is set manually by bitmex
[2015-09-19 03:19:33] cengel : if you dont have business/finance background see Arthur writing new series on blog, may be helpful
[2015-09-19 03:20:54] cengel : https://blog.bitmex.com/bitcoin-futures-basis-trading-lesson-1/
[2015-09-19 03:36:35] mitzip : thanks that'll be a help... I was at first confused by bitfinex being used in the documentation and then I started thinking of how the fair basis was being calculated...
[2015-09-20 01:07:06] zanza : what is the current fair basis interest rate?
[2015-09-20 02:14:43] priceaction : whats up with xlt?
[2015-09-20 02:14:53] priceaction : no liq?
[2015-09-20 02:16:41] cryptojoe : Btc showing downward pressure. i'm ok with dropping into the 220s before a proper launch
[2015-09-20 02:18:17] cryptojoe : On bitstamp the 20ma dropped below 200 for 15m, 30m and 1h period charts.
[2015-09-20 02:35:21] priceaction : i don't see that bicoin touching 220 any time soon
[2015-09-20 02:51:23] cryptojoe : 220s is different from 220
[2015-09-20 02:53:05] cryptojoe : bitstamp hit 220s less than an hour ago
[2015-09-20 03:36:59] peasant-wizard : For someone coming from BFX - what should I start with on BitMEX?
[2015-09-20 03:37:01] peasant-wizard : Spot
[2015-09-20 03:47:18] BitMEX_Arthur : peasant-wizard: Try the Speculation (XBT) series
[2015-09-20 03:47:30] BitMEX_Arthur : That offers 25x leverage on the Bitcoin/USD price
[2015-09-20 04:08:27] zanza : BitMEX_Arthur: where can I find the current fair basis interest rate here?
[2015-09-20 04:08:58] BitMEX_Arthur : zanza: Are you using the Basic or Advanced UI?
[2015-09-20 04:09:20] zanza : i assume basic!
[2015-09-20 04:09:34] zanza : oh i see, options
[2015-09-20 04:09:40] zanza : yes, basic currently
[2015-09-20 04:09:43] BitMEX_Arthur : Ok
[2015-09-20 04:10:09] BitMEX_Arthur : Please switch the the Advanced mode
[2015-09-20 04:10:18] BitMEX_Arthur : And look at the Instrument table at the bottom of the page
[2015-09-20 04:10:29] BitMEX_Arthur : click on the expand button, and scroll to the right
[2015-09-20 04:10:34] BitMEX_Arthur : it is one of the last columns
[2015-09-20 04:10:41] zanza : ahh thank you!
[2015-09-20 04:26:12] zanza : is the fair basis rate the insurance fee?
[2015-09-20 04:26:31] BitMEX_Arthur : There are no insurance fees
[2015-09-20 04:26:52] BitMEX_Arthur : Basically we set the fair basis rate so that Spot + Basis = Future price
[2015-09-20 04:27:17] BitMEX_Arthur : But since liquidations are not based on the last traded price of the future, the market is less prone to manipulation
[2015-09-20 04:27:34] zanza : ahh
[2015-09-20 04:27:52] BitMEX_Arthur : https://www.bitmex.com/app/dynamicProfitEqualisation
[2015-09-20 04:28:02] BitMEX_Arthur : Read the section Fair Price Marking
[2015-09-20 14:50:26] cengel : spreads looking tight
[2015-09-20 14:51:01] BitMEX_Arthur : cengel: Yes XBT we have a new MM
[2015-09-20 14:55:43] cengel : i like
[2015-09-20 15:52:54] DunningKruger : No more support at 228. Down to 225 we go.
[2015-09-20 21:48:03] zanza : is the Fair Basis Rate changed every Friday, every 8 hours, or some other time period
[2015-09-21 00:14:15] BitMEX_Arthur : No it is changed periodically
[2015-09-21 05:08:26] btc_0193 : great spreads right now guys. the fuck is going on with dec and mar
[2015-09-21 05:10:55] cengel : XBTZ15 and XBTH16 had sick spreads too actually
[2015-09-21 05:11:20] cengel : but be careful relying on one marketmaker who is active. you could be bagholding positions you cant get out of
[2015-09-21 05:11:47] SnackyCoins : settlement will get you out 8)
[2015-09-21 05:12:21] cengel : one reason you may want to get out is you think its losing too fast, settlement wont help there
[2015-09-21 05:13:34] SnackyCoins : i often go short on shorter term contracts to counteract my long position
[2015-09-21 05:14:54] devo : one marketmaker does not imply one position, the marketmaker would build a portfolio of offsetting positions.
[2015-09-21 05:17:27] cengel : devo, whats your point
[2015-09-21 05:25:18] priceaction : who the heck is selling all this btc atm?
[2015-09-21 05:27:09] cengel : XBTU15 and XBTV15 are incredibly liquid atm
[2015-09-21 05:29:54] priceaction : 1437 in china on huobi, ok time for bank run, literally:)
[2015-09-21 05:32:55] TrevinHofmann : cengel: Yep. Liquidity is starting to get pretty good.
[2015-09-21 05:43:32] cengel : @TrevinHofmann still not going to accumulate large positions though. Did that before when a new mm was around and couldnt get out when he left
[2015-09-21 05:52:42] BitMEX_Arthur : `XBTU15` got slammed, basis is now 0%
[2015-09-21 05:53:43] j8 : okc weekly got down to 219.25
[2015-09-21 05:54:19] BitMEX_Arthur : Great fill if you got some there
[2015-09-21 05:55:58] cengel : that's a situation where bitmex fair basis would be better. spot never got below 226, imagine getting margincalled on 219
[2015-09-21 05:56:27] BitMEX_Arthur : When you play with okcoin sometimes you get rekt
[2015-09-21 06:32:41] priceaction : BitMEX_Arthur: what's up with china exiting btc???
[2015-09-21 06:33:29] BitMEX_Arthur : What do you mean?
[2015-09-21 06:34:00] priceaction : why are they selling btc like mad?
[2015-09-21 06:47:32] cengel : careful on XBTU15 spread widened
[2015-09-21 06:48:12] DunningKruger : Yeah
[2015-09-21 06:50:12] joequant : it's not necessarily china. One person with a big holding can move the market.
[2015-09-21 06:50:26] joequant : It doesn't look like a general sell off but rather one bit whale.
[2015-09-21 06:51:33] priceaction : joequant: huobi went down to 1437.5
[2015-09-21 06:51:43] priceaction : sorry okcoin
[2015-09-21 06:51:49] priceaction : ok coin
[2015-09-21 06:52:28] joequant : Yeah but it's bouncing back pretty quickly.
[2015-09-21 06:52:45] cengel : what joe is saying is FOMO long now
[2015-09-21 06:52:48] cengel : :)
[2015-09-21 07:02:50] joequant : The only event that I can see is that at 2 p.m. the funds in China do their orders so maybe some big fish told their fund to dump their BTC
[2015-09-21 07:09:27] SnackyCoins : when is the next 8h session change for bitmex?
[2015-09-21 07:15:49] cengel : that would be helpful to name and label the sessions in top
[2015-09-21 07:16:30] SnackyCoins : well im pretty sure its in 45m or so
[2015-09-21 07:17:26] cengel : no it's in about 5 hours
[2015-09-21 07:17:52] SnackyCoins : i don't think it's set to eastern time
[2015-09-21 07:18:00] cengel : but it would be nice just to have a small note/counter to make it more clear
[2015-09-21 07:18:37] cengel : its UTC sitewide. 12 is changeover. that's 4 hr 40 min away
[2015-09-21 07:21:40] cengel : If there was just a Morning , Afternoon , Night session names and a small label at the top with a counter to changeover that would be nice
[2015-09-21 07:27:08] zanza : so having a fair basis price setup like we have, means there are no arbitrage options between contracts?
[2015-09-21 07:27:36] zanza : this stuff is confusing! *smacks head*
[2015-09-21 07:38:33] cryptojoe : i was banking on that dip.
[2015-09-21 07:39:37] BitMEX_Arthur : zanza: Fair basis is only for unrealised pnl purposes
[2015-09-21 07:39:48] BitMEX_Arthur : it has no effect on your realised gains or losses
[2015-09-21 07:39:52] BitMEX_Arthur : so arbitrage is possible
[2015-09-21 07:48:13] BitMEX_Arthur : XBTU15 trading at negative basis
[2015-09-21 07:48:20] BitMEX_Arthur : the mega bears
[2015-09-21 08:01:53] cryptojoe : Haters gonna hate
[2015-09-21 08:02:39] cryptojoe : Looks like an opportunity for the bulls
[2015-09-21 09:34:14] priceaction : BitMEX_Arthur: ever dealt with banks in china:)
[2015-09-21 09:34:24] BitMEX_Arthur : priceaction: Yes I have
[2015-09-21 09:36:51] priceaction : :)
[2015-09-21 09:36:58] priceaction : so much fun
[2015-09-21 09:46:32] BitMEX_Arthur : Usually I haven't had problems, online banking is so good in china
[2015-09-21 12:46:03] Guest8292 : hello, is the insurance fee charged and how high is it?
[2015-09-21 12:54:25] BitMEX_Wally : Guest8292: It is no longer charged
[2015-09-21 12:55:42] Guest8292 : ok, thanks
[2015-09-21 12:56:43] Guest8292 : why was it dropped? you no longer guarantee the contracts?
[2015-09-21 12:57:07] BitMEX_Wally : We still guarantee the settlement of `XBU` contracts
[2015-09-21 12:57:11] BitMEX_Wally : We just simplified the fee schedule
[2015-09-21 12:57:47] BitMEX_Wally : https://www.bitmex.com/app/fees
[2015-09-21 13:36:43] Guest8292 : is XBU capped or subject to DPE?
[2015-09-21 13:37:30] STRML : Guest8292: No, XBU settlements are guaranteed
[2015-09-21 13:38:22] STRML : They are suitable for hedging because there is no DPE / socialized loss.
[2015-09-21 13:38:59] Guest8292 : are there any caps, price limits?
[2015-09-21 13:39:05] BitMEX_Arthur : No
[2015-09-21 13:40:47] BitMEX_Arthur : For `XBU` contracts, there is a Limit Up/ Limit Down for each 8 hour session, but that is just a speed bump it does not cap the settlement of the future price
[2015-09-21 13:42:35] Guest8292 : how do you make sure that you have enough funds to cover XBU traders losses?
[2015-09-21 13:43:00] BitMEX_Arthur : We have persons who have provided insurance on the `XBU` contracts
[2015-09-21 13:43:09] BitMEX_Arthur : Also they feature much lower leverage, and are conservatively margin called
[2015-09-21 14:08:32] Guest8292 : thanks
[2015-09-21 16:19:17] SnackyCoins : lol'd @ "wrong.com" in the trader digest
[2015-09-21 16:22:21] SnackyCoins : this is a good issue :)
[2015-09-21 16:26:44] BitMEX_Arthur : Thanks'
[2015-09-21 17:03:49] cengel : i still can't work out if a China crisis will be bullish or bearish for BTC
[2015-09-21 17:08:34] cengel : bearish if they liquidate BTC to settle fiat liabilities , bullish if they flee fiat and see BTC as protection
[2015-09-21 17:13:02] miratrader : it's just my opinion but I doubt that China will see BTC as protection, it's way too risky for an average person. We had too many quick price drops, we would need 6-12 months of relative stability to consider BTC more or less safe.
[2015-09-21 17:31:37] cengel : i think the year-to-date floor at 200 is already somewhat fulfilling that
[2015-09-21 17:34:07] cengel : if we were sitting in the 100s i would be more inclined to agree with you
[2015-09-21 17:45:37] miratrader : It's not even the floor, it's volatility. IMHO we would need 6-12 months in 200-250 range or a steady rise in price. Right now I just can't recommend bitcoin as a store of value to any of my non-trader friends. As a speculative asset maybe
[2015-09-21 17:55:55] cengel : I don't think the volatility as big of an issue as that it keeps the floor
[2015-09-21 17:56:03] cengel : in terms of a place to flee
[2015-09-21 21:27:20] BitMEX_Sam : Hey, mystery solved. https://21.co/
[2015-09-21 21:33:57] BitMEX_Sam : In a way, I suppose it's what we all expected: something that sounds very promising to investors but has dubious real-world value
[2015-09-21 23:31:16] zanza : a $400 Rasberry Pi?
[2015-09-21 23:58:57] BitMEX_Arthur : They have $100mm and that's what they come up with
[2015-09-22 00:15:32] zanza : Cartman: "Start up, Cash Out, Bro Down"
[2015-09-22 00:22:04] BitMEX_Arthur : I still don't understand why you just don't sell hardware with a wallet linked to a bank account with autorisation to auto buy bitcoin
[2015-09-22 00:22:22] BitMEX_Arthur : Coinbase could launch a software version of this and it wouldn't necessitate buying a pc
[2015-09-22 00:23:24] BitMEX_Arthur : If the goal is truely machine micro payments
[2015-09-22 02:18:49] cryptojoe : Author call it. Are you long in near term? Or are we stuck in the 22x doldrums for the next couple days. :) Can't say "no idea".
[2015-09-22 02:20:55] cryptojoe : price is testing the 230 resistance as we speak
[2015-09-22 02:21:24] cryptojoe : BitMEX_Arthur: ...on bitstamp, and finex
[2015-09-22 02:22:30] BitMEX_Arthur : I don't think we break through
[2015-09-22 02:22:33] BitMEX_Arthur : I think we are going to test 220
[2015-09-22 02:22:35] cryptojoe : ...or 228 resistance
[2015-09-22 02:22:39] BitMEX_Arthur : but i have 0 conviction in this, just a hunch
[2015-09-22 02:22:45] BitMEX_Arthur : i will not be putting any size on that prediction
[2015-09-22 02:23:22] zanza : https://www.reddit.com/r/Buttcoin/comments/3lui5h/21_incs_bitcoin_computer_is_for_sale_at_amazon/
[2015-09-22 02:24:44] cryptojoe : yeah, and every year leading up to oct 15 (IRS final tax deadline) the price tanks.
[2015-09-22 02:25:57] BitMEX_Sam : zanza: That whole thread... hilarious
[2015-09-22 02:35:31] cryptojoe : Stinks i have to cash out some btc to pay some bills. hate selling low
[2015-09-22 03:11:44] zanza : :( you could always Hedge!
[2015-09-22 07:38:55] DunningKruger : Damn. Was too hesitant to short again.
[2015-09-22 07:40:03] DunningKruger : But that's greedy I suppose.
[2015-09-22 07:44:26] cengel : is there a way to see the past mark price to check why stops dont get triggered
[2015-09-22 07:46:08] BitMEX_Arthur : Are you on Basic or Advanced view?
[2015-09-22 07:46:23] cengel : advanced
[2015-09-22 07:46:36] BitMEX_Arthur : You want historic mark price?
[2015-09-22 07:46:39] cengel : yea
[2015-09-22 07:46:57] cengel : because the stop i had didnt get triggered
[2015-09-22 07:47:01] BitMEX_Arthur : We don't have that data at the moment
[2015-09-22 07:50:01] j8 : from my experience the spot price updates every minute on the minute, not sure if thats true in general
[2015-09-22 07:51:32] j8 : so looking at `.XBT` historical values might help.
[2015-09-22 07:52:14] BitMEX_Arthur : Yes .XBT updates every minute
[2015-09-22 07:53:12] BitMEX_Arthur : cengel: We are looking into it right now
[2015-09-22 07:54:00] cengel : thanks
[2015-09-22 07:54:39] cengel : fwiw my web ui was frozenish, i had to refresh and the mark price on my screen was still 228 (above trigger)
[2015-09-22 07:55:22] cengel : but im fairly certain it was active in this drop where it should have been triggere
[2015-09-22 07:56:18] BitMEX_Wally : cengel: Looking at the execution history your StopLimit sell order was triggered at 2015.09.22 07:19:19 UTC
[2015-09-22 07:56:38] cengel : then why doesnt it show in actie orders
[2015-09-22 07:56:41] BitMEX_Wally : It then sat in the order book at the limit price until you cancelled it at 07:40:52
[2015-09-22 07:57:02] BitMEX_Arthur : cengel: Hey can we continue this over email
[2015-09-22 07:57:04] cengel : oh the order it puts in the order book isnt a limit order?
[2015-09-22 07:57:17] BitMEX_Arthur : We don't like to discuss account order details over the chat
[2015-09-22 07:57:32] BitMEX_Arthur : Wally will reach out via email to you with what happened.
[2015-09-22 07:58:15] BitMEX_Wally : It became a standard limit order and it was the best offer. I'll contact you privately
[2015-09-22 07:59:17] cengel : thanks
[2015-09-22 08:09:59] cengel : @wally i sent a bit more information in email to support
[2015-09-22 08:23:25] BitMEX_Wally : cengel: Thanks, I have replied with full details
[2015-09-22 08:24:46] cengel : okay yea it just was a tad bit not aggressive neough, no big deal
[2015-09-22 08:24:56] cengel : i have a question about isolating margin on open orders
[2015-09-22 08:25:21] BitMEX_Wally : Sure
[2015-09-22 08:25:24] cengel : if i check "isoalte margin" under "open positions" where open orders appear for contracts with no open positions
[2015-09-22 08:25:37] cengel : will this mean that when the order is filled and the position opens, that the margin will be isolated from entry price?
[2015-09-22 08:25:42] cengel : and at full 25x
[2015-09-22 08:25:44] BitMEX_Wally : Correct
[2015-09-22 08:25:51] cengel : ok thanks.
[2015-09-22 08:41:21] cengel : Is there any word on when the adjustable margin isolation will come
[2015-09-22 08:41:44] BitMEX_Arthur : No ETA on that
[2015-09-22 09:41:37] DunningKruger : Nice bouncy
[2015-09-22 09:44:57] BitMEX_Arthur : What's going on in Chi
[2015-09-22 09:47:03] cengel : floating to the moooon
[2015-09-22 10:00:21] cengel : the orderbook got inverted on that move for me on webUI
[2015-09-22 10:05:37] cengel : i sent screenshot i assume its ui issue not engine
[2015-09-22 10:05:48] BitMEX_Wally : Just looking now
[2015-09-22 10:06:00] BitMEX_Wally : Must be something funny with your WebSocket
[2015-09-22 10:06:11] BitMEX_Wally : I bet if your refresh the page it will look fine
[2015-09-22 10:06:26] cengel : i snapped the shot before it changed
[2015-09-22 10:06:43] cengel : and i changed to Chrome from Firefox
[2015-09-22 10:08:20] BitMEX_Wally : The `Recent Trades` tab last showed at trade at 11:48 so the UI is clearly missing updates
[2015-09-22 10:10:10] BitMEX_Wally : Could you let us know exactly which version of Firefox you are having this problem with?
[2015-09-22 10:13:02] cengel : the ss was saved at 11:50
[2015-09-22 10:13:26] cengel : and it was from Chrome. Version 45.0.2454.99 (64-bit) ubuntu
[2015-09-22 10:14:08] cengel : i switched because firefox didnt refresh in the move before
[2015-09-22 10:51:14] DunningKruger : help
[2015-09-22 10:51:40] DunningKruger : Oh OK I can see my chat now and place orders. It was 429ing on me
[2015-09-22 11:02:56] BitMEX_Wally : DunningKruger: We have rate limits to protect the exchange, I'll get Sam to have a look at why it was triggered
[2015-09-22 11:03:42] DunningKruger : BitMEX_Wally: thanks. Closed pages on all devices and relogged on PC and was all OK.
[2015-09-22 15:43:18] loke : BitMEX_Wally: Hi Wally, I'm back to getting kicked offline about once an hour now. It's still not a massive issue, but starting to get annoying. Maybe ask Sam to look at it again?
[2015-09-22 15:47:05] BitMEX_Sam : loke: I'll take a look
[2015-09-22 15:48:04] loke : Many thanks!
[2015-09-22 19:27:51] hashman : anyone can help me with stop limit order?
[2015-09-22 19:28:24] hashman : I'm trying to place stop limit order, but the "Set buy stop" button is not active. only the "Set sell stop" button
[2015-09-22 19:28:28] hashman : what would cause this?
[2015-09-22 19:31:06] BitMEX_Sam : hashman: That's because of the stop price you've set.
[2015-09-22 19:31:20] BitMEX_Sam : If the button is inactive, it means that the stop would execute immediately if placed.
[2015-09-22 19:31:41] BitMEX_Sam : We disable the button to prevent accidental execution. At that point it is no different than a limit order.
[2015-09-22 19:32:38] hashman : so I want to place an order to buy
[2015-09-22 19:32:48] hashman : should i do a limit order and then set a stop order after?
[2015-09-22 19:33:24] BitMEX_Sam : Generally, you would place a stop if you want to place an order to get you out of a position if it becomes unprofitable
[2015-09-22 19:33:39] BitMEX_Sam : So e.g. you might buy at 230 and place a sell stop at 240 for the same amount
[2015-09-22 19:33:52] BitMEX_Sam : sorry, 220. Need coffee.
[2015-09-22 19:33:58] hashman : right
[2015-09-22 19:34:14] hashman : so I am wanting to buy XLT7D at 2.8
[2015-09-22 19:34:24] hashman : and sell if it drops to 2.7
[2015-09-22 19:34:27] BitMEX_Sam : Right
[2015-09-22 19:34:53] hashman : do i place a stop limit order to open my position, or just a regular limit order to open the position?
[2015-09-22 19:35:01] BitMEX_Sam : So you'd want something like a stop price of 2.7 and a limit price of 2.6, to ensure you hit the book when the stop triggers.
[2015-09-22 19:35:07] BitMEX_Sam : You'd place a regular limit order to open the position.
[2015-09-22 19:35:38] BitMEX_Sam : Stops don't hit the book until the price reaches a certain threshold - they're not used for opening a position.
[2015-09-22 19:36:12] hashman : If I place a regular limit order at 2.7 and it has not been filled yet, can I still place the stop to activate when it fills, or do I have to wait until it fills to put the stop in?
[2015-09-22 19:36:46] BitMEX_Sam : You can still place the stop, but then you might end up going short if the price drops and your limit order never fills
[2015-09-22 19:36:59] hashman : I see
[2015-09-22 19:37:07] BitMEX_Sam : But if it dropped... your limit should fill
[2015-09-22 19:37:13] BitMEX_Sam : So long story short, that's fine to do
[2015-09-22 19:38:47] hashman : Can I have more than one stop on the same position, say on a long postion - one stop to sell if the price drops to cut my loss, and another to sell if the price rises to take profit?
[2015-09-22 19:38:59] hashman : Or should I just place a bunch of limit orders?
[2015-09-22 19:39:08] BitMEX_Sam : Yes, but only the one to cut your losses would be a stop
[2015-09-22 19:39:11] BitMEX_Sam : The other would just be a limit order.
[2015-09-22 19:39:22] hashman : right so a stop and limit order on the same position
[2015-09-22 19:39:27] BitMEX_Sam : e.g. buy at 2.8, stop sell at 2.7, and a limit sell at 2.9
[2015-09-22 19:39:34] hashman : cool
[2015-09-22 19:40:12] hashman : so on the stop limit order, "Stop price" is the mark price ?
[2015-09-22 19:40:35] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah, stop price it the price at which it will trigger.
[2015-09-22 19:40:44] BitMEX_Sam : So on a stop sell, if it hits that price or below, the limit order will enter the book.
[2015-09-22 19:40:53] hashman : and the "limit price" is the price it will enter the book at..
[2015-09-22 19:40:58] BitMEX_Sam : And vice versa on a buy. The tooltips should help you.
[2015-09-22 19:40:58] BitMEX_Sam : Yep
[2015-09-22 19:41:13] BitMEX_Sam : Hover over Limit Price & Stop Price for some more information.
[2015-09-22 19:41:14] hashman : so you want the limit price a bit lower than the stop price to ensure your order gets filled, that's the idea
[2015-09-22 19:41:21] BitMEX_Sam : Exactly
[2015-09-22 19:41:24] hashman : I've done that, still confused
[2015-09-22 19:41:31] hashman : but thatnks for the info
[2015-09-22 19:41:36] hashman : makes sense now
[2015-09-22 19:41:56] BitMEX_Sam : Great
[2015-09-22 19:42:11] hashman : if you set the limit price too high or same as the stop price, the order could not be filled so the stop wouldn't work...
[2015-09-22 19:42:27] hashman : there is always some risk of that anyways right
[2015-09-22 19:42:39] BitMEX_Sam : Right. There are reasons someone might want to fill the book at that price, but generally they just want to get out of a position
[2015-09-22 19:43:02] BitMEX_Sam : So in your case you may want to just set a very low limit price so you can just get out fast. Generally you would base it on your liquidation price
[2015-09-22 19:43:36] hashman : that makes sense. so I don't really need to use the stop limit orders. I could open a position and just set the limit orders for high and low ?
[2015-09-22 19:43:57] BitMEX_Sam : No, you'd have to use a stop for the low price
[2015-09-22 19:44:07] hashman : ok that's what I thought
[2015-09-22 19:44:08] BitMEX_Sam : Because if you entered a sell limit at 2.6 right now, it would execute
[2015-09-22 19:46:22] hashman : ok. open limit order for 2.8. Set limit sell at 3. then set sell stop for : stop price 2.6 - limit price 2.55 - for example
[2015-09-22 19:46:51] hashman : this would open a position at 2.8, take profit at 3 and cut my loss at 2.55 -right?
[2015-09-22 19:48:55] BitMEX_Sam : Yep. 2.55 or better
[2015-09-22 19:49:50] hashman : cool
[2015-09-23 12:51:08] Areckp : After my deposit is confirmed what should I .com?
[2015-09-23 12:51:57] Areckp : I meant........ what should I do?
[2015-09-23 12:55:05] BitMEX_Wally : Areckp: You can trade
[2015-09-23 12:55:33] BitMEX_Wally : We have some trading guides: https://www.bitmex.com/app/lesson1
[2015-09-23 12:56:06] BitMEX_Wally : You can try buying/selling just 1 contract of `XBTU15` to get a feel of things: https://www.bitmex.com/app/trade/XBTU15
[2015-09-23 13:20:15] Areckp : Am very new and green on this...... I thought that once I deposit my fund, everything else will be done by you guys
[2015-09-23 13:26:30] Areckp : Hey guys, am I not getting any response from you???
[2015-09-23 13:26:55] BitMEX_Wally : Areckp: We are a derivatives exchange, not a hedge fund
[2015-09-23 13:27:08] BitMEX_Wally : Once you deposit funds they sit in your account until you decide what to do with them
[2015-09-23 13:29:02] Areckp : Please wally...... I need your guidance if you dont mind?
[2015-09-23 13:29:16] BitMEX_Arthur : We can help guide you if you have specific questions. But essentially if you think Bitcoin is going up buy, if its going down sell
[2015-09-23 13:29:28] BitMEX_Wally : We're happy to help
[2015-09-23 13:30:35] Areckp : So it means when I log out nothing happens to my account?
[2015-09-23 13:31:18] BitMEX_Wally : Correct
[2015-09-23 13:34:51] Areckp : I can see on the top bar there is Limit, stop limit and close position, would you mind to explain
[2015-09-23 13:35:16] BitMEX_Wally : These are different order types
[2015-09-23 13:36:25] BitMEX_Wally : A limit order means you can specify a maximum price you wish to buy at, or a minimum price to sell at
[2015-09-23 13:38:15] BitMEX_Wally : A stop limit order is a limit order that is only triggered when the mark price of the instrument reaches the limit price
[2015-09-23 17:40:26] BombaUcigasa : BVOL 24H gone?
[2015-09-23 18:02:42] gustavo7 : hi, i cannot submit orders, after a while the top bar listing the contracts glitches down to the bottom of the screen
[2015-09-23 18:09:43] BitMEX_Sam : BombaUcigasa: Yes, we've delisted it for now until we can source some better liquidity
[2015-09-23 18:09:58] BitMEX_Sam : gustavo7: Could you explain further? The ticker bar goes to the bottom?
[2015-09-23 18:10:22] gustavo7 : exactly
[2015-09-23 18:12:04] miratrader : Are you delisting XBU24H as well?
[2015-09-23 18:12:11] gustavo7 : "Uncaught TypeError: this.linkState is not a function"
[2015-09-23 18:12:42] gustavo7 : when i click the order button like "set buy stop"
[2015-09-23 18:12:42] gustavo7 : when i click the order button like "set buy stop"
[2015-09-23 18:13:06] gustavo7 : on loading the page the console gives Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'indexOf' of null"
[2015-09-23 18:13:58] BitMEX_Sam : Thanks gustavo7. Will push a hotfix shortly
[2015-09-23 18:14:06] BitMEX_Sam : Which browser?
[2015-09-23 18:14:21] gustavo7 : chrome 45
[2015-09-23 18:14:48] gustavo7 : so indexOf comes first when loading the page. from VM1262:17836
[2015-09-23 18:17:28] BitMEX_Sam : miratrader: Yes. We will likely be adding a new short-term XBT contract.
[2015-09-23 18:18:03] miratrader : BitMEX_Sam: ok, good, that's what I always wanted :-)
[2015-09-23 18:22:50] BitMEX_Sam : gustavo7: You should be okay on a refresh
[2015-09-23 18:23:18] BitMEX_Sam : as for the `indexOf` error, my traces are suggesting that may be an extension, not our code
[2015-09-23 18:24:03] gustavo7 : yep that one is still coming up, and it's not in your app.js
[2015-09-23 18:24:45] gustavo7 : ah savefromnet helper userscrypt va tampermonkey
[2015-09-23 18:24:50] BitMEX_Sam : Aha
[2015-09-23 18:25:11] BitMEX_Sam : We don't run any external scripts, so if you don't see it from our origin, we didn't put it there
[2015-09-23 20:42:20] SnackyCoins : are the 24h inverse contracts coming back?
[2015-09-23 22:04:30] j8 : `BVOL24H` is down too, i wonder if that's a glitch
[2015-09-23 22:16:21] BitMEX_Sam : j8: SnackyCoins: That's intentional. We're working to concentrate liquidity. I'll have Arthur talk more about our plans soon
[2015-09-24 02:08:45] lockhedge : what happened to XBU24H?
[2015-09-24 02:08:56] lockhedge : (hi again, guys)
[2015-09-24 02:10:20] BitMEX_Arthur : Hi
[2015-09-24 02:10:31] BitMEX_Arthur : We are consolidating products to focus traders liquidity
[2015-09-24 02:10:32] lockhedge : hi Arthur
[2015-09-24 02:10:42] BitMEX_Arthur : an official announcement will be forthcoming on Friday after settlement
[2015-09-24 02:15:55] lockhedge : sent you a message on skype
[2015-09-24 11:30:02] BombaUcigasa : ETH7D says fair price is 0.00349?
[2015-09-24 11:31:06] BombaUcigasa : nevermind, back up to 379
[2015-09-24 13:48:25] BitMEX_Arthur : Market looking strong
[2015-09-24 16:00:39] BitMEX_Arthur : If you are bullish, `XBTU15` is trading at a discount
[2015-09-24 16:54:04] TrevinHofmann : Wouldn't call myself bullish on the short term, but I'll take my chances with a discount.
[2015-09-24 17:17:15] DunningKruger : Nah
[2015-09-24 17:17:45] DunningKruger : Gravity beckons ;)
[2015-09-24 17:29:23] TrevinHofmann : Worked for me :)
[2015-09-24 17:29:35] TrevinHofmann : Got in at 233.59
[2015-09-24 17:30:28] TrevinHofmann : Left a sell that filled at 235 on my drive back from school. And now I can still market sell the rest at around 234.4.
[2015-09-24 17:31:27] TrevinHofmann : I think I'll wait for the contacts to pair with spot for the other half.
[2015-09-24 17:31:40] TrevinHofmann : contracts*
[2015-09-24 17:32:47] TrevinHofmann : And $1-$1.50 isn't much, but it goes well with leverage.
[2015-09-24 17:38:50] DunningKruger : Well looking at the volume it wouldn't have been worth it for me. Don't be sure about being able to sell either, market changes quickly.
[2015-09-24 17:39:25] DunningKruger : Was tempted to cash out a few days ago so I'm all or nothing this week
[2015-09-24 17:39:28] hashman : MOON
[2015-09-24 17:40:22] DunningKruger : "That's no moon" :p
[2015-09-24 17:50:51] MarketQ : Everyone should read http://www.truthcoin.info/blog/contracts-oracles-sidechains/
[2015-09-24 17:51:19] MarketQ : "Permissionless smart contracting systems introduce contradictions in incentives which destroy all interesting use-cases." they become susceptible to what Paul calls " The Parasite Contract" with which "any Host (external-data contract) can’t grow to a significant size without being invaded by Parasites and leeched to death." as Paul states "(Probably) Nothing Can Fix This"
[2015-09-24 17:51:45] MarketQ : This parasite contract seems very dangerous for ETH
[2015-09-24 18:05:10] BitMEX_Sam : Interesting, thanks for the link MarketQ
[2015-09-24 18:10:18] BitMEX_Sam : So the idea is, projects like Augur are susceptible to copycat projects that can offer the same product but without fees by just reusing the oracles that everyone using Augur is paying for.
[2015-09-24 18:39:49] naturalog : interesting, that truthcoin looks like a pale tauchain
[2015-09-24 18:47:01] MarketQ : Paul came up with the idea that inspired augur even worked with them however from what I understand augur is broken because of its ico and they are a bunch of cokeheads
[2015-09-24 18:48:17] MarketQ : The idea is that ETH is doomed because it allows people to write contracts that leech off its network if they try to solve it it means telling people what they can and cant program on the network
[2015-09-24 18:48:22] mlg5867 : Dont invest in Augur then, more REP for us :)
[2015-09-24 18:49:16] MarketQ : Augur is just a weak implementation and you can expect heavy duty competition soon , the idea of its ICO is contradictory to its use
[2015-09-24 18:53:22] j8 : bitcoin is doomed because it allows people to leech off its network by transferring assets other than btc
[2015-09-24 19:09:18] TrevinHofmann : Please excuse me for only skimming the article and being nowhere near as familiar with Ethereum and Augur as I am with Bitcoin, but I think it's a bit narrow minded to assume this dooms Ethereum/Augur.
[2015-09-24 19:10:22] naturalog : tau dooms all those niceguys :)
[2015-09-24 19:10:49] TrevinHofmann : There are other incentives for being an oracle, and wouldn't leeches be less trusted?
[2015-09-24 19:23:04] MarketQ : Look lets set aside this parasite contract and look at some other problems with Ether like the dev distribution
[2015-09-24 19:23:23] ContourTrade : wheres this going boys? up or down
[2015-09-24 19:25:22] BitMEX_Sam : When in doubt, moon
[2015-09-24 19:25:27] MarketQ : the contracts actually used are not General Contracts but Specific Contracts at a Specific Time with Specific People (to quote a psychometrics professor of mine: “You’ll never meet ‘A General Person’”). What if Satoshi had shipped a C++ compiler (a “general blockchain-creation platform”)? What if Shakespeare had shipped 26 letters (a “general script-creation platform”)? If a student clips a fresh pen to his blank exam, has he “solved” it “for all answers”? Of course not: the work was the specifics. Is a new complier useful if it can only be used to write casino software? Is a new alphabet useful if it can only be used within a casino? Is a pen useful if it can only write the word “casino”? Of course not: generality’s value is in being unrestricted and able to meet many needs. And even supposing you do find a specific use-case, and you do write a quality piece of software, you still have the problem of learning that it is secure and worth using and convincing others of what you’ve le
[2015-09-24 19:30:48] BitMEX_Sam : So, you're saying Ethereum is not useful because the only application you believe it can have is gambling, and all other contract types have fatal flaws
[2015-09-24 19:31:08] SnackyCoins : IBM shipped a method for interfacing hardware with their equipment
[2015-09-24 19:31:16] SnackyCoins : they were the first to do that
[2015-09-24 19:31:31] SnackyCoins : the expansion card was born and they became the biggest tech company in america
[2015-09-24 19:33:01] SnackyCoins : (it was thought insane, because up until that point things were kept proprietary on purpose, to keep your customer locked in)
[2015-09-24 19:34:04] BitMEX_Sam : They recognized the value of a platform versus a specific implementation
[2015-09-24 19:34:23] BitMEX_Sam : Although it appears the previous thinking is back in vogue as integration has become more valuable than expansion, at least in the personal computing market
[2015-09-24 19:34:39] SnackyCoins : also, even if you're transferring something else, don't you still need at least some ETH to write/enforce the contract?
[2015-09-24 19:35:30] SnackyCoins : I'd say maybe in iLand, but even apple desktops run on intel cores & nvidia gpus
[2015-09-24 19:36:07] BitMEX_Sam : True, but almost no laptops are expandable (with the exception of some hacker-focused models, and even then only in limited ways), and essentially no phones can be modified
[2015-09-24 19:36:23] BitMEX_Sam : It's getting harder and harder to even get root access on devices you own, much less expand them.
[2015-09-24 19:36:38] BitMEX_Sam : Re: ETH, yes, I believe you still need to burn some Ether to create a contract or enforce any of its rules
[2015-09-24 19:36:44] SnackyCoins : that's an unfortunate tradeoff for space conservation =\ having a socket takes more room than just railing it to the board
[2015-09-24 19:36:52] BitMEX_Sam : Yep.
[2015-09-24 19:37:44] SnackyCoins : my pc is like 1'x2'x2.5'
[2015-09-24 19:38:00] SnackyCoins : massive case with tons of empty space :)
[2015-09-24 19:38:45] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah. I used to have a few of those, but started traveling so I had to get rid of them
[2015-09-24 19:39:10] BitMEX_Sam : I miss it but you get used to a laptop pretty quick. It's been years since I felt like there wasn't enough power in a laptop
[2015-09-24 19:39:31] BitMEX_Sam : Not like the old days when you had to screw around for weeks to make the thing usable.
[2015-09-24 19:39:54] SnackyCoins : i'd miss the monitor space
[2015-09-24 19:40:05] SnackyCoins : even 2 isn't enough
[2015-09-24 19:40:30] BitMEX_Sam : Got a 4k recently - totally awesome
[2015-09-24 19:40:46] SnackyCoins : in a laptop? :)
[2015-09-24 19:41:07] BitMEX_Sam : Nah, 40" TV-style unit. Korean. Just goes over DisplayPort, no fuss
[2015-09-24 19:41:19] BitMEX_Sam : For at home, of course.
[2015-09-24 19:41:48] SnackyCoins : Juicy :)
[2015-09-24 19:42:04] BitMEX_Sam : And surprisingly inexpensive. You can get one of these for < US$600
[2015-09-24 19:42:59] SnackyCoins : Wow, that's a release-generation game console
[2015-09-24 19:43:03] SnackyCoins : I would have expected at least 4 digits
[2015-09-24 19:43:35] BitMEX_Sam : Oh yeah it's not bad. Hell, there's a Dell 27" 4K monitor on sale today for $450
[2015-09-24 19:43:42] BitMEX_Sam : I think at that resolution you probably want 40"+
[2015-09-24 19:44:07] SnackyCoins : Yeah, or start boost the font sizes on everything
[2015-09-24 19:44:13] SnackyCoins : boosting*
[2015-09-24 19:44:52] SnackyCoins : Should be some really crazy deals come holiday time in that case
[2015-09-24 19:45:13] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah, that works well in newer Windows & OSX
[2015-09-24 19:45:23] BitMEX_Sam : You can just scale it like the retina displays do.
[2015-09-24 19:45:32] BitMEX_Sam : I would expect some awesome 4K deals this November
[2015-09-24 19:46:21] SnackyCoins : Just realized that burning ETH makes it the middle man for third party goods. I'd say that business model is working well for Amazon
[2015-09-24 19:46:42] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah, the presale was a good idea for funding the development. Much like Augur
[2015-09-24 19:47:07] SnackyCoins : Of course you could say the same about BTC in a way, in the end it's all adoption
[2015-09-24 19:47:09] BitMEX_Sam : And in the end you'll have to mine to keep running
[2015-09-24 19:47:41] SnackyCoins : because even best buy & Sears middle-man goods like amazon now, with limited success
[2015-09-24 19:48:24] BitMEX_Sam : OpenBazaar + the arbitration system is a good example of the future of that IMO
[2015-09-24 19:48:34] BitMEX_Sam : Some very interesting things to come from that team
[2015-09-24 19:49:16] BitMEX_Sam : In the end, you need a very strong reputation system or a middleman... or both.
[2015-09-24 19:50:38] SnackyCoins : p2p customer service? :)
[2015-09-24 19:51:12] BitMEX_Sam : In a way
[2015-09-24 19:51:39] BitMEX_Sam : If you give arbiters incentive (fees) and power (deciding vote in a tie), the system could work
[2015-09-24 19:53:27] SnackyCoins : Interesting
[2015-09-24 19:59:41] TrevinHofmann : BitMEX_Sam: meeting up tonight? I'm probably either going to the BTC meetup or playing chess on campus.
[2015-09-24 20:00:16] BitMEX_Sam : TrevinHofmann: Unfortunately going to have to miss it, I have another engagement
[2015-09-24 20:01:58] TrevinHofmann : BitMEX_Sam: Ok, no problem.
