This is a mirror of the original BitMEX trollbox archive that used to be online here.
BitMEX disabled their archive after the DDOS attack so I have decided to make my mirror publicly available.

Well now, a few days after I made this mirror available to the public, the original archive from BitMEX is online again.
But since it is still limited (neutered to the last few hundred messages) I will keep my FULL mirror alive.

You have access to more than 50 million trollbox posts. This is more than 7 gigabyte of data hosted on a $5 server so please be patient or consider a donation

[2016-07-13 14:42:46] elmorte : That's the thing...they wanna fly me out to discuss that. I'm just curious.
[2016-07-13 14:43:04] elmorte : It would be cash from what I understand, at a premium

[2016-07-13 15:07:33] elmorte : BitMEX_Sam: how come I have a liqdn price for a short position that's worth 1/3 of my available balance?
[2016-07-13 15:08:46] BitMEX_Sam : Shorts always have a liquidation price since your potential liability is infinite
[2016-07-13 15:08:56] BitMEX_Sam : Longs can only go to zero, but shorts can go to infinity

[2016-07-13 17:24:40] elmorte : Looking at the volume on Polo should give you a decent idea
[2016-07-13 17:25:58] rapidtrades : im not considering anything besides ltc and eth atm
[2016-07-13 17:26:35] rapidtrades : not sure active trading works in other alts due to costs
[2016-07-13 17:26:42] rapidtrades : for my systems anyway
[2016-07-13 17:27:43] BitMEX_Greg : yeah the top traded alts besides ETH on Polo vary quite a bit from day to day
[2016-07-13 17:27:48] rapidtrades : BitMEX_Sam: @BitMEX_Greg can we get a new longterm quanto? the ppl want it
[2016-07-13 17:28:05] BitMEX_Greg : I believe we are still discussing it internally, @rapidtrades
[2016-07-13 17:28:42] rapidtrades : cool tnx...guess we'll wait
[2016-07-13 17:29:14] elmorte : BitMEX_Greg: true, just looking at it. I thought NXT == MMNXT...do I feel silly now
[2016-07-13 17:31:06] rapidtrades : Rado: what did u use to program ur bots again? i forgot
[2016-07-13 17:57:14] odieoh : Would like a new quanto as well
[2016-07-13 17:59:13] BitMEX_Greg : As much as we want to list one, we just need to justify it. The volumes are not great. Looking at the U16 contract, the past 24H volume was 30 XBT.
[2016-07-13 18:07:31] Rado : rapidtrades: coffee script
[2016-07-13 18:08:19] Rado : but the code I write is using the cryptotrader platform that interprets my code and does all the API calls
[2016-07-13 18:08:57] Rado : BitMEX_Greg: you need to come up with something
[2016-07-13 18:09:00] Rado : here is why
[2016-07-13 18:09:19] Rado : I saw a few users in here complain about the high funding rate when long
[2016-07-13 18:09:55] Rado : so the two use cases for trading are: 1. Day trading and 2. Long term holding of contracts
[2016-07-13 18:10:22] Rado : 2 can not be done with XBTUSD due to very high funding rates
[2016-07-13 18:10:51] Rado : I love that the funding rate is high and can hold the opposite position to generate the interest
[2016-07-13 18:11:07] Rado : however people that want to hold BTC fo rlong term on leverage can't right now
[2016-07-13 18:11:24] Rado : and I think you want these people to be your customers
[2016-07-13 18:11:55] BitMEX_Greg : Well the funding rates are only high when there is FOMO, which reflects that people will pay a premium to go long. Right now they are approximately 0.04% a day which is similar to the funding charge on Bitfinex for margin trading.
[2016-07-13 18:12:31] BitMEX_Greg : There's always going to be a charge for trading with leverage
[2016-07-13 18:12:48] BitMEX_Greg : whether that be in a funding level or in a Future's basis
[2016-07-13 18:13:05] Rado : that's fine
[2016-07-13 18:13:16] REKT : Liquidated long on `XBJ24H`: Sell 450 @ 68712.0
[2016-07-13 18:13:44] Rado : but the complaint was that the funding rate came to 72% for the period the user was complaining
[2016-07-13 18:14:19] Rado : I am just trying to help :-)
[2016-07-13 18:14:19] BitMEX_Greg : 72%? What period was that over?
[2016-07-13 18:14:28] Rado : you can decide to listen to your customers or not
[2016-07-13 18:14:30] BitMEX_Sam : That's if you extrapolate the % over a long period of time without acknowledging that it changes daily
[2016-07-13 18:14:42] BitMEX_Sam : Also could have been including leverage which is nonsense.
[2016-07-13 18:15:00] BitMEX_Sam : By that logic, if you buy a long-dated future at 20x with 10% premium, you've paid a 200% fee
[2016-07-13 18:15:27] Rado : BitMEX_Sam: but you can control that by using stop orders
[2016-07-13 18:15:33] BitMEX_Greg : Also in the past, the 24H futures last September/October traded at an annualised premium of something like 1400%
[2016-07-13 18:15:36] Rado : where the other one is charged to you no matter waht
[2016-07-13 18:16:11] Rado : maybe the 24H contract is the answer then
[2016-07-13 18:16:12] Rado : not sure
[2016-07-13 18:16:29] BitMEX_Greg : Well we have a 24 contract, just denominated in JPY
[2016-07-13 18:16:31] Rado : what I knwo is that I want another product besides the swap
[2016-07-13 18:16:56] Rado : that might satisfy me for my trading
[2016-07-13 18:17:14] BitMEX_Sam : You still pay the basis, one way or another
[2016-07-13 18:17:29] BitMEX_Sam : A funding transaction is more in your face, basis swings are more subtle
[2016-07-13 18:18:20] Rado : it's user perception I agree
[2016-07-13 18:18:57] Rado : personally I love BitMEX rates
[2016-07-13 18:19:05] Rado : compared to 1Broker or Whaleclub
[2016-07-13 18:19:09] aethlios : Rado: The difference with long term contracts and swap is that you can lock a stable-fixed premium, also can hedge with swap which pays variable. I agree we could have a 3month, 6month and 12month contract to have a 1 year yield curve.
[2016-07-13 18:19:11] Rado : they charge insane fees
[2016-07-13 18:19:21] Rado : 0.2% overnight
[2016-07-13 18:19:49] Rado : that is what I want aethlios
[2016-07-13 18:20:03] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah, bucket shops will always be more expensive because of what they guarantee
[2016-07-13 18:20:05] Rado : the BitMEX complaint is there is no volume
[2016-07-13 18:20:24] Rado : but if you don't have all contracts so people can trade spreads you can't expect the volume
[2016-07-13 18:21:11] aethlios : Rado: Yes with long term contracts many more complex strategies can be played, basically you can bet on the slope of the curve.
[2016-07-13 18:21:26] Rado : yep
[2016-07-13 18:21:53] Rado : BitMEX is still my favorite broker ;-)
[2016-07-13 18:22:16] aethlios : Now I will happily go long the xbtu16 and short the swap, betting that the average swap 8 hour premium will be higher than 0.07% which is the fixed yield of xbtu16
[2016-07-13 18:22:16] Rado : can't wait to sell my alt coins so I can start taking advantage of the funding rate
[2016-07-13 18:23:09] Rado : aethlios: what I am thinking of doing is trade ETHXBT to collect the rate
[2016-07-13 18:23:44] BitMEX_Greg : Rado: Thanks! But yeah basically if we see more volume on the long-dated then we will keep them. It's up to you guys to trade it, if noones trading then its a true reflection of demand
[2016-07-13 18:23:47] Rado : short/long around 50BTC on Kraken and buy/sell the equivalent contracts in here
[2016-07-13 18:24:20] Rado : BitMEX_Greg: to see the real volume you need a few more contracts
[2016-07-13 18:24:28] Rado : like Sep, Oct and Dec for example
[2016-07-13 18:24:48] Rado : I might be wrong, you guys are the experts
[2016-07-13 18:24:53] BitMEX_Greg : I think that would make it worse as its just fragmenting what liquidity is there already
[2016-07-13 18:25:15] Rado : not if people trade spreads
[2016-07-13 18:25:28] Rado : they will be buying/selling two contracts with the same volume
[2016-07-13 18:25:47] aethlios : I also believe we need a 1 year btc curve. the long term contracts wont reduce volume of swap, they will increase because of the spread betting.
[2016-07-13 18:26:52] lockhedge : aethlios: https://www.cryptofacilities.com they have futures until March 17 but nobody trades them
[2016-07-13 18:27:54] Rado : lockhedge: how are their fees?
[2016-07-13 18:28:33] justinlooking : the fills window is much worse than before!
[2016-07-13 18:29:14] BitMEX_Sam : How so?
[2016-07-13 18:29:15] Rado : Dec - 731.18
[2016-07-13 18:29:19] justinlooking : oh wait, i think i had stale data, a refresh has made it better
[2016-07-13 18:29:20] justinlooking : sorry sam
[2016-07-13 18:29:24] odieoh : I think just having a single 3 month quanto available is the happy medium (ie when Sep expires, Dec starts)
[2016-07-13 18:29:27] Rado : Mar - 748.72
[2016-07-13 18:29:38] justinlooking : it was showing pulled orders that hadn't even traded...
[2016-07-13 18:29:39] Rado : This is a good trade. Short Dec and long Mar
[2016-07-13 18:37:26] fineregex : actually, is the USA30 bull run one giant short squeeze?
[2016-07-13 18:39:00] fineregex : i thought it would be affected somewhat at least when sentiment/open orders is 90% short all the time
[2016-07-13 18:41:01] lockhedge : Rado: fees are not bad but there is no liquidity for futures with long maturities
[2016-07-13 18:43:38] 1QaZxSw2 : non-expiring contracts seem to be the future. Now bitmex and coinpit.io and soon everyone else will copy it
[2016-07-13 18:46:22] BitMEX_Greg : I think coinpit.io copied us haha
[2016-07-13 19:05:45] 1QaZxSw2 : you guys were certainly first
[2016-07-13 19:10:58] 1QaZxSw2 : but they claim they dont have DPE or funding.... still trying to figure how it works
[2016-07-13 19:11:14] 1QaZxSw2 : DPE is a bitch, it went to 30% the last drop
[2016-07-13 19:11:55] BitMEX_Greg : We are working out ways to reduce this, so bear with us.
[2016-07-13 19:12:25] BitMEX_Greg : Be careful on other exchanges that don't have a funding or proper DPE (or deleveraging) system.
[2016-07-13 19:12:39] BitMEX_Greg : As at the end of they day they will be the ones on the hook
[2016-07-13 19:38:36] 1QaZxSw2 : right, have to figure out what i hate more, the deleveraging or the DPE
[2016-07-13 20:13:05] IChTj4OeMavRq6qeIyEb : 1QaZxSw2: Deleveraging for me. Makes hedging totally unpredictable if not impossible. So does DPE to some degree but not as much
[2016-07-13 20:15:44] BitMEX_Greg : What if you had an option to automatically put a limit or market order after you had been deleveraged?
[2016-07-13 20:48:17] IChTj4OeMavRq6qeIyEb : BitMEX_Greg: Well if that order is filled then what would be the reason for my position to be deleveraged in the first place?
[2016-07-13 20:48:30] IChTj4OeMavRq6qeIyEb : And why wouldn't it happen again right away?
[2016-07-13 20:49:45] BitMEX_Greg : Well the process would be the liquidation would happen, if its not filled then you would get deleveraged, then another order would be put on the market for you
[2016-07-13 21:14:48] nip : BitMEX_Greg: just increase maintenance margin a little bit
[2016-07-13 21:15:51] nip : just dont make it as high as 1%. okcoin already does that and has not had dpe this year
[2016-07-13 21:15:57] rapidtrades : holy shit....yen pairs just wont go down
[2016-07-13 21:16:06] rapidtrades : i feel another rapeage coming
[2016-07-13 21:16:20] BitMEX_Greg : nip: We are working on it, I believe its on testnet already
[2016-07-13 21:17:02] rapidtrades : it's hard to take the market srsly on this one when they got ECB wrong back dec and brexit right before...then exaggerated right after
[2016-07-13 21:17:24] nip : i very greatly prefer dpe to deleveraging
[2016-07-13 21:17:34] rapidtrades : dpe sucks man
[2016-07-13 21:17:49] nip : deleveraging is a terrible way of pretending you dont have dpe
[2016-07-13 21:18:48] rapidtrades : how so?
[2016-07-13 21:18:58] nip : there just isnt enough liquidity here yet to support 0.5% maintenance margin
[2016-07-13 21:19:28] rapidtrades : that statement doesn't make any sense because 0.5% is the same regardless of liquidty
[2016-07-13 21:20:46] nip : okcoin tried multiple solutions with LTC
[2016-07-13 21:21:11] nip : what ended up working was just increasing maintenance margin while leaving initial margin the same
[2016-07-13 21:22:59] rapidtrades : LTC is definetley not working at okc ..i myself got raped with 50% during halving last year
[2016-07-13 21:23:10] rapidtrades : over 50% actually
[2016-07-13 21:23:16] nip : last year
[2016-07-13 21:23:25] nip : they fixed it since then
[2016-07-13 21:23:26] rapidtrades : did they change their model after july/august?
[2016-07-13 21:23:29] nip : yes
[2016-07-13 21:23:32] rapidtrades : k what is it now
[2016-07-13 21:24:15] rapidtrades : i mean LTC/USD been having a much calmer year so not really a good indicator anyway
[2016-07-13 21:24:44] rapidtrades : i think even 20/1 is too high for crypto, maybe 10/1?
[2016-07-13 21:24:57] rapidtrades : only reason 20/1 works for okc is cos they manipulate the market
[2016-07-13 21:26:16] nip : or maybe it works because they let you choose 20x leverage but keep initial margin the same whether you choose 20x or 10x
[2016-07-13 21:26:37] nip : they keep maintenance margin the same i mean. you choose your initial margin just like here
[2016-07-13 21:26:55] rapidtrades : but that means that the effective margin is 20/1 no
[2016-07-13 21:27:01] rapidtrades : so how does it help
[2016-07-13 21:27:05] nip : yeah and that is fine
[2016-07-13 21:27:10] rapidtrades : guess it's not 40/1
[2016-07-13 21:27:15] rapidtrades : so that's a start lol
[2016-07-13 21:27:37] rapidtrades : leverage here is just too high to not have DPE
[2016-07-13 21:28:08] nip : what im saying is you can keep 50x leverage and lower dpe by increasing maintenance margin
[2016-07-13 21:28:25] nip : leave initial margin at 1 to 2%
[2016-07-13 21:28:35] nip : make maintenance margin higher than 0.5%
[2016-07-13 21:28:59] rapidtrades : agree
[2016-07-13 21:29:19] nip : okcoin margin calls people earlier i guess that is the difference i am pointing out
[2016-07-13 21:29:30] BitMEX_Sam : We have a tiered risk limit system that is launching very soon.
[2016-07-13 21:29:31] nip : they liquidate a bit sooner, so lower dpe
[2016-07-13 21:29:43] BitMEX_Sam : It's already in testnet. Essentially larger positions require a larger maintenance margin %.
[2016-07-13 21:30:25] nip : that sounds like a good solution as long as using multiple accounts does not become a problem
[2016-07-13 21:31:20] BitMEX_Sam : Yes, this means that we can set the initial risk limit lower, which make using multiple accounts to build a sizable position with the lowest possible margin much more difficult
[2016-07-13 21:31:39] BitMEX_Sam : We are also considering 1% MM on XBTUSD but we haven't come to a decision on that yet. If we do there will be plenty of warning.
[2016-07-13 21:33:45] rapidtrades : ok great....u kinda missed the boat on this one with volatility dying post pump
[2016-07-13 21:33:51] rapidtrades : but better now then never
[2016-07-13 21:34:18] BitMEX_Sam : Code doesn't come free, these systems take time to work out & test.
[2016-07-13 23:11:50] 1QaZxSw2 : so how is your deleveraging going to work? like cryptofacilities or like coinpit.io or something else?
[2016-07-13 23:13:22] BitMEX_Greg : We are still working out the fine tuning of it
[2016-07-13 23:14:39] 1QaZxSw2 : im sure you have traded on both so you can adopt the best and adjust the shortcomings but in my opinion, coinpit.io has too high leverage and cf has too low
[2016-07-13 23:27:36] BitMEX_Greg : Yeah 400x or whatever it is is a bit dangerous
