This is a mirror of the original BitMEX trollbox archive that used to be online here.
BitMEX disabled their archive after the DDOS attack so I have decided to make my mirror publicly available.

Well now, a few days after I made this mirror available to the public, the original archive from BitMEX is online again.
But since it is still limited (neutered to the last few hundred messages) I will keep my FULL mirror alive.

You have access to more than 50 million trollbox posts. This is more than 7 gigabyte of data hosted on a $5 server so please be patient or consider a donation

[2016-04-12 00:17:02] sleger : habibi: that chart just shows people lending btc like I did and then taking them out
[2016-04-12 00:17:41] habibi : sleger: u overestimate polo lending ammount
[2016-04-12 00:17:51] REKT : Liquidated long on `ETH7D`: Sell 13 @ 0.01996

[2016-04-12 02:36:01] kingscrown : https://twitter.com/kingscrownBTC/status/719715611539042304
[2016-04-12 02:46:27] rentchev : why would it crash @viptrader?
[2016-04-12 02:47:16] viptrader : first, it went under support, and second polo ddos will create more panic
[2016-04-12 02:47:20] viptrader : rentchev:
[2016-04-12 02:47:49] rentchev : lets see :-)
[2016-04-12 02:47:51] podizzle3k : same reason btc use to crash during btc-e ang gox ddos back in the day
[2016-04-12 02:48:06] podizzle3k : more reliable than dead cat bounce
[2016-04-12 02:48:58] rentchev : kraken has a service that sits in front of their website to prevent ddos
[2016-04-12 02:49:02] rentchev : not sure if they still use it
[2016-04-12 02:49:35] podizzle3k : it doesnt prevent ddos it just redirects you when the site is being ddosed
[2016-04-12 02:50:10] podizzle3k : the only thing that can prevent ddos is an equal strength ddos protection.. if you are overpowered theres nothing to be done
[2016-04-12 02:51:17] rentchev : I hope they have some smart engineers at polo
[2016-04-12 02:55:49] podizzler3000 : nobody dumping on kraken

[2016-04-12 03:02:15] rentchev : nah
[2016-04-12 03:02:21] rentchev : I don't want that to happen

[2016-04-12 03:22:19] Cryptolicious : if polo never comes back will eth be pegged to kraken instead?
[2016-04-12 03:22:21] Cryptolicious : just asking
[2016-04-12 03:23:02] rentchev : too early for that
[2016-04-12 03:23:54] BitMEX_Arthur : Cryptolicious: We are monitoring, the price isn't moving on Kraken so we are going to stay with Poloniex
[2016-04-12 03:24:08] BitMEX_Arthur : If we do switch to Kraken for marking purposes, we will let everyone know
[2016-04-12 03:24:32] rentchev : Thanks Arthur

[2016-04-12 04:33:15] micmix : polo API is back up and seems to be OK now. I started to close all shorts just in case, too dangerous with all those downtimes

[2016-04-12 04:37:06] REKT : Liquidated long on `ETH7D`: Sell 502 @ 0.01860
[2016-04-12 04:37:44] rapidtrades : that's a big one ^^
[2016-04-12 04:38:02] rapidtrades : the turd from the curd

[2016-04-12 04:44:11] rapidtrades : guys remember when eth was going to replace btc kekeke
[2016-04-12 04:46:47] uiop : ethusd sitting at $8
[2016-04-12 04:46:56] uiop : waiting for a push
[2016-04-12 04:46:57] micmix : it's still too early to say anything, I feel like we're in friendster/classmates times for crypto, we don't even have our myspace yet
[2016-04-12 05:05:06] rapidtrades : to the guy that claimed spiking rates on finex are due to shorting....look at it now b1tch
[2016-04-12 05:05:30] rapidtrades : bid 0.01 ask 0.028 and finex is the highest of all
[2016-04-12 05:06:34] rapidtrades : the FRR for borrowing BTC is now only 1/3 below USD
[2016-04-12 05:06:39] j8 : rapidtrades: you talkin bout me
[2016-04-12 05:07:42] j8 : more shorting than lending.. how else would it go up
[2016-04-12 05:08:16] rapidtrades : j8: eth demand brah....its not a closed system
[2016-04-12 05:10:29] rapidtrades : that 0.019 bid for demolished
[2016-04-12 05:15:45] j8 : it sort of is closed though.. how do you long eth with borrowed btc on finex? best you can do is use some of your btc to buy eth and some to borrow usd to long btc to cover
[2016-04-12 05:18:40] rapidtrades : j8: are u still defending ur shitty theory.
[2016-04-12 05:19:04] j8 : i wanna hear your shitty theory
[2016-04-12 05:19:07] rapidtrades : facts are eth is on finex, rates spike as i expected
[2016-04-12 05:19:19] rapidtrades : so my ''theory''' just got supported
[2016-04-12 05:19:23] rapidtrades : urs is shit
[2016-04-12 05:20:37] j8 : what the fact that borrowing > lending means rates go up?
[2016-04-12 05:21:20] rapidtrades : oh forget about it...doesn't matter much anyway
[2016-04-12 05:22:23] j8 : my actual theory is that there's a lot of people short finex and long china / futures
[2016-04-12 05:23:51] j8 : and no one wants to lend because they might want their capital asap if this breaks
[2016-04-12 05:27:38] rapidtrades : j8: it already broke ppl are just stupid to realize it
[2016-04-12 05:27:59] rapidtrades : j8: u may have a point as I am one of those ppl kekeke
[2016-04-12 05:28:19] hitme1 : it hasnt broken
[2016-04-12 05:28:21] rapidtrades : guess we'll see what happens to rates if finex comes back inline with market
[2016-04-12 05:28:30] rapidtrades : hitme1: go away
[2016-04-12 05:28:39] j8 : me too, and when you start getting stung on swap it's a sign that it's a crowded traded
[2016-04-12 05:29:42] rapidtrades : guess u gotta pay for the CNY exposure one way or another :)
[2016-04-12 05:32:10] hitme1 : rapidtrades: lets keep friendly
[2016-04-12 05:32:43] j8 : okc's getting dragged down by a bad cny price again. next week should be slightly better
[2016-04-12 06:16:06] REKT : Liquidated long on `ETH7D`: Sell 103 @ 0.01863
[2016-04-12 07:22:15] wurstgelee : charts broken? cant get past the loading animation
[2016-04-12 07:22:24] wurstgelee : even with hard refresh
[2016-04-12 07:22:28] wurstgelee : opera
[2016-04-12 07:58:27] bigbloobear : is XBT options or futures contracts?
[2016-04-12 08:02:32] j8 : bigbloobear: they're futures, but there is a volatility component, like options
[2016-04-12 08:02:52] bigbloobear : how so?
[2016-04-12 08:03:45] j8 : bigbloobear: https://blog.bitmex.com/xbt-vs-xbu-chain/
[2016-04-12 08:05:04] j8 : they're quanto futures that pay out btc proportional to change in btc/usd
[2016-04-12 08:05:48] j8 : compared to inverse futures which effectively pay out usd proportional to change in btc/usd, but converted to btc
[2016-04-12 08:06:47] bigbloobear : I see that, but what is the volatility component
[2016-04-12 08:07:04] j8 : it means you profit more from large moves
[2016-04-12 08:07:30] bigbloobear : if you are the right side
[2016-04-12 08:07:54] j8 : yes they're biased to the long side
[2016-04-12 08:07:57] bigbloobear : can you buy & sell the same contract?
[2016-04-12 08:08:12] bigbloobear : (i.e. to stradlle ect)
[2016-04-12 08:09:00] j8 : that's pointless, but it's possible to do a volatility straddle by holding quanto's and inverse futures / spot
[2016-04-12 08:09:39] j8 : or you can do calendar spreads using two different expiries of XBT series
[2016-04-12 08:10:49] bigbloobear : yes, makes sense.
[2016-04-12 08:12:32] bigbloobear : why did you say i'ts pointless
[2016-04-12 08:13:15] j8 : if you could long and short the same contract, it just nets out to nothing
[2016-04-12 08:15:36] j8 : some exchanges let you do it, here it will just close your position
[2016-04-12 08:16:34] bigbloobear : its not necessarily pointless, quite a common spread when trading futures/options
[2016-04-12 08:17:25] j8 : it's not the same as buying a call and a put, or anything like that
[2016-04-12 08:19:30] bigbloobear : also, what is your opinion as to which website has the greatest volume for contracts/options
[2016-04-12 08:20:52] j8 : options on bitcoin, none that i know of, except coinut and it has very little volume

[2016-04-12 09:58:48] miramm1115 : it was on the books, just not real in a sense that the trader didn't want it to get filled
[2016-04-12 10:08:02] miramm1115 : do you like 200k bidwall? ;=)

[2016-04-12 13:26:33] habibi : micmix: what was the amount of contrats on okc @november/december?

[2016-04-12 14:56:18] BitMEX_Sam : zippy1day: I've seen that happen occasionally - best way to fix it is to refresh
[2016-04-12 14:56:27] BitMEX_Sam : It appears to be a bug in the chart code, I've been trying to trace it down
[2016-04-12 14:56:41] zippy1day : done that not working
[2016-04-12 14:57:04] BitMEX_Sam : Is the loading indicator just going endlessly, or do you see an empty box

[2016-04-12 14:59:18] sleger : works for nothing
[2016-04-12 14:59:30] BitMEX_Sam : Try a hard refresh, ctrl(or cmd if mac)+shift+r
[2016-04-12 14:59:44] zippy1day : same on XBT
[2016-04-12 14:59:49] sleger : still same
[2016-04-12 15:00:16] BitMEX_Sam : Hmm. The browser must be caching the containing iframe.
[2016-04-12 15:00:30] sleger : i closed the tab and reopened, same
[2016-04-12 15:00:35] BitMEX_Sam : Try holding ctrl and hitting the reload button in the menu
[2016-04-12 15:01:16] BitMEX_Sam : if that doesn't work, I have an idea that will force it - will just need a few minutes
[2016-04-12 15:01:31] sleger : that s same as ctrl refresh and it doesnt work
[2016-04-12 15:08:55] BitMEX_Sam : Okay. I'm working on a fix that will bust the cache. In the meantime, you can hit the minimize button (basic layout) or simply resize the chart down to nearly nothing (advanced layout)
[2016-04-12 15:09:00] BitMEX_Sam : I'll let you guys know when I have something.
[2016-04-12 15:12:28] wurstgelee : also broken in opera

[2016-04-12 15:23:48] BitMEX_Sam : Okay. Just a second to bring that fix here.
[2016-04-12 15:29:14] BitMEX_Sam : zippy1day: Okay, please try a refresh here.

[2016-04-12 18:24:11] nip : rapidtrades: im sure they charged a daily carry fee

[2016-04-12 18:25:07] nip : and im still sure they charged a daily carry fee
[2016-04-12 18:26:12] rapidtrades : carry in forex is charged usually on the currency with the lower rate....its not that much tbh if ur playing both sides
[2016-04-12 18:26:30] rapidtrades : i usually cos now with negative rates its a bit more murky
[2016-04-12 18:26:32] sleger : i dont think he knows what he is saying when he says "carry fee"
[2016-04-12 18:26:49] rapidtrades : oh,,,spot forex never expires
[2016-04-12 18:26:53] nip : sleger: i mean the spread they charge over what the interest rate difference should be
[2016-04-12 18:27:03] nip : im not a big fan of those casino forex dealers
[2016-04-12 18:27:12] rapidtrades : yes they pocked a small % of the interest diff
[2016-04-12 18:27:46] sleger : some charge/pay the same to long / shorts so there's not necessary a fee. Dont remember what oanda does
[2016-04-12 18:28:07] sleger : this has nothing to do with weekends in particular anyways
[2016-04-12 18:28:12] rapidtrades : sleger: not in retail...is that the case higher up?
[2016-04-12 18:28:29] nip : sleger: that seems like a strange practice. why not use them for a long term currency trade then?
[2016-04-12 18:28:59] sleger : because there's no arb possible
[2016-04-12 18:29:03] rapidtrades : i have no clue what ur getting at sir @nip

[2016-04-12 19:31:51] atodorov07 : say 30 sep
[2016-04-12 19:32:15] atodorov07 : does my wallet balance get recalculated every month? or at 30 sep
[2016-04-12 19:34:52] nip : atodorov07: every friday i think
[2016-04-12 19:35:09] rentchev : yes every Friday
[2016-04-12 19:35:14] nip : every day would be nice though im sick of withheld profit
[2016-04-12 19:35:21] BitMEX_Sam : atodorov07: Your wallet balance doesn't include unrealised PNL, but every Friday at rebalance, withheld profit is converted to unrealised profit, and unrealised profit is converted to realised
[2016-04-12 19:35:31] BitMEX_Sam : So effectively withheld profit because realised profit
[2016-04-12 19:35:38] nip : withheld profit + unrealized loss = margin call
[2016-04-12 19:35:42] atodorov07 : hmmm
[2016-04-12 19:36:04] atodorov07 : thanks
[2016-04-12 19:36:07] REKT : Liquidated short on `ETH7D`: Buy 469 @ 0.01745
[2016-04-12 19:36:22] BitMEX_Sam : nip: If you're on multiple contracts, yes, that's possible - the reasoning being, if there were a massive DPE on the contract you had profit on, you would not actually have the money to cover that loss
[2016-04-12 19:36:59] BitMEX_Sam : We do have a system that calculates maximum possible loss based on realised pnl across a contract and unlocks up to 50% of users' withheld profit daily.
[2016-04-12 19:37:39] BitMEX_Sam : That's mentioned at https://www.bitmex.com/app/dynamicProfitEqualisation#contract-settlement-rebalance - but it only occurs when the system has detected that it is safe to do so
[2016-04-12 19:37:41] nip : yeah i noticed at least some of the withheld was being used
[2016-04-12 19:38:02] nip : i wish i could use it all as maint margin even if i cant cash it out
[2016-04-12 19:39:24] nip : i get your reasoning. more frequent rebalances would help though
[2016-04-12 19:42:52] habibi : i like how it is tbh
[2016-04-12 19:42:55] BitMEX_Sam : Agreed, the issue is that longer periods help prevent DPE
[2016-04-12 19:43:07] BitMEX_Sam : If we rebalanced daily, it's more likely that a loss would stick and users would lose out
[2016-04-12 19:44:04] BitMEX_Sam : It's a spectrum; consider automatic deleveraging as a continuous rebalance, and our system as weekly; the reasoning for weekly being that the general trend is for the insurance fund to grow, so we want to give the system some time to recoup its losses if there are any
[2016-04-12 19:45:16] nip : BitMEX_Sam: a problem with long periods is: if there is a dpe and i do not have a position, i will not open one until the dpe disappears
[2016-04-12 19:45:27] viptrader : eth moon
[2016-04-12 19:45:37] nip : i would be opening myself to reduced profits and full sized losses
[2016-04-12 19:47:06] REKT : Liquidated short on `ETH7D`: Buy 40 @ 0.01795
[2016-04-12 19:50:33] nip : what i mean is the longer periods reduce dpe likelihood and size by making people with profit during nonvolatile periods subsidize those with profit during periods generating dpe
[2016-04-12 19:50:42] nip : insurance fund seems like a more fair way to reduce dpe
[2016-04-12 19:51:34] rapidtrades : nip: please shut up
[2016-04-12 19:51:48] nip : rapidtrades: i have no idea what im actually talking about

[2016-04-12 19:52:17] podizzle3k : heehaw
[2016-04-12 19:52:21] BitMEX_Sam : nip: Right, the point is that with the DPE% publicly listed, the market should adapt its pricing with the built-in risk of profit loss
[2016-04-12 19:52:33] viptrader : ETH MOON LOL
[2016-04-12 19:52:49] podizzle3k : slow your roll buddy its down 15% on the day

[2016-04-12 19:54:59] podizzle3k : and the people who sold them the eth took their btc and went home

[2016-04-12 19:58:57] podizzle3k : wrong word lol

[2016-04-12 20:09:19] Mangalica : Sam, are you here?
[2016-04-12 20:10:00] Mangalica : I just got an email about a "large number of errors being transmitted from my client"
[2016-04-12 20:10:13] BitMEX_Sam : Yes
[2016-04-12 20:10:15] BitMEX_Sam : That was me
[2016-04-12 20:11:06] Mangalica : So how can I help? I'm not doing anything extra, i just have the page open in FF (which is not always 100% stable)
[2016-04-12 20:11:39] BitMEX_Sam : Sure - just let me know if you see that full-page modal again, and if you do, what you were doing before it happened
[2016-04-12 20:12:03] BitMEX_Sam : I'm seeing an infinite recursion bug, which is difficult to diagnose without the full stack trace, which unfortunately Firefox won't send
[2016-04-12 20:12:05] Mangalica : Also I didn't get any messages about this on the page. Or at least not recently.
[2016-04-12 20:12:15] BitMEX_Sam : Really - nothing today?
[2016-04-12 20:12:37] Mangalica : Nothing but i did have to refresh the page due to the site not being responsive.
[2016-04-12 20:12:50] BitMEX_Sam : Ah, yes, that was the issue
[2016-04-12 20:13:04] BitMEX_Sam : Do you recall what you were doing beforehand? Or was it just sitting?
[2016-04-12 20:14:33] Mangalica : Well i only noticed it when i clicked buy or sell, so i might have clicked that a couple of times (i size my positions by multiples of x). After i've seen no effect i refreshed.
[2016-04-12 20:15:13] BitMEX_Sam : Okay. I'll do some debugging in Firefox and see if I can reproduce the issue.
[2016-04-12 20:15:36] Mangalica : It might have frozen already while sitting though. If i had to bet i'd say it was frozen already, so take that into account.
[2016-04-12 20:15:38] BitMEX_Sam : In general I've seen much better performance and reliability from Webkit-based browsers like Chrome/Chromium/Opera.
[2016-04-12 20:16:10] Mangalica : Yeah FF is a pain in general, I don't know why i keep using it as my main. I put all charting and other stuff on Opera/Chrome already
[2016-04-12 20:16:47] BitMEX_Sam : Yeah. It seems rendering performance has gotten even worse in the last few releases
[2016-04-12 20:16:54] Mangalica : Will probably move the rest of the "mission critical" stuff over to those as well.
[2016-04-12 20:16:58] BitMEX_Sam : I've been profiling the site on FF and nearly 70% of the time is spent in paint
[2016-04-12 20:17:17] BitMEX_Sam : Simplifying the site's styles doesn't seem to help significantly, either. Something odd about it
[2016-04-12 20:17:56] cryptokeeper : why isnt mark price updating
[2016-04-12 20:18:06] cryptokeeper : oh there we go... nevermind
[2016-04-12 20:18:06] BitMEX_Sam : cryptokeeper: Which contract?
[2016-04-12 20:18:09] cryptokeeper : ETH7D
[2016-04-12 20:18:36] Mangalica : The main Bitfinex interface, for example, will lead to 25% CPU use, two gigs of mem use and a crash within hours (at best) in Firefox. Irrespective of whether it's active or not, etc
[2016-04-12 20:18:59] BitMEX_Sam : Mangalica: Wow, that's crazy.
[2016-04-12 20:19:18] BitMEX_Sam : I wouldn't be surprised if we did too - I do a lot of work to keep our memory usage in check, but the browser has some responsibility as well
[2016-04-12 20:19:31] BitMEX_Sam : cryptokeeper: Could be the polo API being slow, it usually is
[2016-04-12 20:19:48] Mangalica : Should probably report it to them but I'm resigned to the fact that FF simply turned to shit. Reinstalled it, added only needed add-ons... doesn't matter.
[2016-04-12 20:20:02] cryptokeeper : where do you get your BTC price from now? you guys are using an index price or something now?
[2016-04-12 20:20:43] BitMEX_Sam : cryptokeeper: It's from Tradeblock (https://tradeblock.com/markets/index/)
[2016-04-12 20:21:04] BitMEX_Sam : On the 29th, we're changing to Kaiko, which is similar but has static weightings set every month by an open formula
[2016-04-12 20:21:23] cryptokeeper : right... that is what it was
[2016-04-12 20:21:25] BitMEX_Sam : Mangalica: That's too bad, I very much like the idea and development behind FF, but it has definitely gotten worse in recent months
[2016-04-12 20:21:39] BitMEX_Sam : Hoping Servo will save their market share
[2016-04-12 20:22:26] cryptokeeper : the spreads are retardo on ETH7D lol
[2016-04-12 20:22:38] cryptokeeper : if you market buy you get auto-filled in a horrible position
[2016-04-12 20:22:51] habibi : there was few moments today that we got better spread then polo ;D
[2016-04-12 20:23:03] BitMEX_Sam : It ebbs and flows
[2016-04-12 20:23:06] cryptokeeper : like next one in is 1712
[2016-04-12 20:24:05] Mangalica : Last time i checked Opera had a HUGE memory leak that was "triggered" by Bitcoinwisdom. It ended up using up to 1gig of memory PER TAB. So had to revert to v.31something and manually kill the auto-update feature.
[2016-04-12 20:24:43] nip : this is the only tab i have ever had a memory leak problem with
[2016-04-12 20:24:47] nip : the chart was to blame
[2016-04-12 20:25:09] Mangalica : Reported it a couple of times to Opera but nothing was done about it. Not before v.35 or 36 anyway, since I haven't tested those.
[2016-04-12 20:31:25] cryptokeeper : so looking at this right now... if i were to market buy on ETH7D
[2016-04-12 20:31:32] cryptokeeper : 161 contracts... i would get filled at 1702
[2016-04-12 20:31:43] cryptokeeper : errr market sell sorry
[2016-04-12 20:32:12] cryptokeeper : oh it changed again... now up to 1701....
[2016-04-12 20:32:26] Mangalica : The MM is just trying to stay alive with all this volatility. :P
[2016-04-12 20:33:11] sleger : cryptokeeper: do you want to sell i can make you a price at 1720 ?
[2016-04-12 20:33:30] cryptokeeper : i dont want my entry price to be 1720
[2016-04-12 20:33:35] cryptokeeper : its at 1755 right now
[2016-04-12 20:34:03] sleger : so just wait to miss the boat

[2016-04-12 20:53:39] Mangalica : FF is the sick man among browsers on my computer. Win7 64bit, a couple of security and privacy extensions installed, maybe that's the reason.
